Up to you and what your priorities are, I'd always choose "proper" cycling shoes as the must have, something like the Kursks which are for tootling around town are a "nice to have", if you like the style.

Dude - stop obsessing and just pick one. _____ are good. _____ are good. ______ are good. ______ are good. It's all about personal taste but until you start to ride on them you won't have any sort of personal experience to draw on.
Start with one of them and go from there, learn what they're like, and then make your mind up to change or keep your decision.
Besides your "umm-ing" and "aah-ing" is only delaying your riding in the nice weather. That's criminal.
Common sense.......and thank fuck for that! Especially as now we have a one stop, DIY, fill in the blanks and all questions answered template to many a stoopid debate.
e.g. front brakes, back brakes, two brakes, no brakes.... done
@Dammit - excellent combo there

Time ATAC Alium - Sidi Dominator. Solid combination and not too expensive. You can save money on the shoes but it's worth spending for Sidi's for their durability and comfort.
You're a lot less likely to accidentally unclip with ATAC's over SPD's. Just do it. -

Ok guys this will be my very last post on the subject of the matter. I went into my LBS to look at the Time Pedals they had both the Roc ATAC S and Roc ATAC Carbon (think they have been discontinued this year) in stock and fairly cheap with a price difference of 7 sterling between the two.
I could also get the XS model for 3 pound difference online, but heard people say that the XS are harder to engage and disengage?
Think I should go for the 2010 Carbon Pedals? -

I have a pair of aliums for sale, no cleats, almost new £15.

Aliums seem to last a while. I've got 2 sets that are now over 10 years old - zero attention, loads of use and abuse. Still function perfectly. One of the best bang-for-buck bike components you can buy.
good news :)
i've had my Aliums 1 and a half months and getting on with them very well -

Just picked up a pair of new Time ATAC XS Titan Carbons off eBay for £70.
I've never owned any SPD or ATAC pedals before, and don't have the shoes I want yet to test them out, but I just wanted to ask: Are the little bars which you clip onto meant to be super stiff? When I push them with my hand they barely move against the spring. Is that normal?
Thanks.
-
• #392
depends, do you normally have to get the missus to open jars for you?
-
• #393
Nope. I always do the openings of my ladies' jars.

• #394
then it's probably fine.

The weight/force of your foot against the spring is a lot more than your hands can easily apply. It's normal.

Ah ok. That's what I thought. Thanks for the info. Now just need the right shoes...

Chainreactioncycles is your friend. Lots of Sidis in big sizes

Yep, but still £175. I know they're worth it but I don't have that cash right now. Trying to find some second hand on eBay. Maybe import from the States.
Cheers Dammit but I don't think I can spend that much on the Sidis at the moment if I am going to get the pedals too :(
Should I try to avoid the Chrome Kursks or do you think they'll be fine? Cheers Smallfurry also will definitely try to get used to the clipless pedals on a quiet road or car park before I start commuting on them
