Turbo Trainer Advice

  • I've just googled zwift.

And I want it. Who else is using it and what's the consensus?

Any particular trainers recommended for use with it? Presume only compatible with certain tech? Any good deals in bleugh friday sales?

  • Will do and will be running a few tests with vectors and hopefully a pair of p1s to check, apparently if they are well cared for and you zero offset them regularly then they are good.

Actually no idea if it rides ok...

Saddle will be changed and position setup tomorrow!

Bike actually isn't mine but its on long term loan...

  • Why you think they ride so good?

@Sainsburys_Ed sounds good. I just remember we had a few in the gym I was at for a while, I was doing 300W just spinning my legs. But they never got looked after.

  • I use it for doing structured training, it's good at keeping you occupied while trying to stick to certain watt outputs.

  • Why you think they ride so good?

Good inertia and can go to very high watts.

  • I was doing 300W just spinning my legs

    Boast post

  • What was good was when they did the classes and raced them.
And the leader board had Joe Bloggs doing 500W for like 30 minutes.
I did laugh. Felt sorry for the people on the properly calibrated ones.

  • I didn't spot a Sam, but was riding along with @hippy for a bit. Did you ride?

Got horrible stitch after about 10 minutes which was me done for. Still, slowly getting fitter.

  • I saw hippy in the start pen, then afterwards just as he finished his warm down. Brutal TT, unsurprisingly I managed to up my FTP by about 15 watts.

  • managed to up my FTP by about 15 watts.

    Nice one.

  • Have had a very little spin on a wattbike.
Feels good but very noisy. Sounds like you've got a helicopter in your garage.

  • Would fit in well with my jet engine sounding lemond then!

  • Apart from being too unfit to actually do that. I've got better shit to do than start some kind of turf war on turbo trainers :P

  • it's nowhere near as bad as a lemond, but is noisier than a direct drive turbo, only been on for 10 minutes as wanted to get pedals calibrated, and just sat at 200w for 10 minutes, its pretty close to my garmins at that level. longer session planned tonight, will see if I can still hear the TV at proper power levels and make a decision about wireless headphones!!

  • I jumped in. It didn't make much sense but I did ride the 10mi so it kind of achieved the goal of getting me to ride a bit more (although so did going to the gym and forgetting my keys this morning).

But then it carried on like it was actually 20mi? What's the point if there's no finish line/leader board/results?

  • Ha, like those 'fat lady gym bike' saddles.

    I want one for TCR...

  • Early days but it's different. I can see the novelty wearing off quickly though, especially for someone who prefers to be outside, even when turbo training, staring at a wall.

I'm using a Computrainer with it but could also use my ANT+ dongle and one of my powermeters. It looks like you can also use calibrated normal trainers that have output of some kind - speed readings I guess?

  • I saw a rider with TTM off in the distance, presumed that was you. I was busy wondering what everything was. Had a few power spikes that reminded me that I had lungs which was good I guess.

  • Are you "Sam" in that world?

If I paid for it for say a month, can I just cancel it? I'm almost certainly not going to use it outside of winter.

  • no finish line/leader board/results?

There was a finish line, after the final small climb, and there should have been a distance progress bar on screen with a countdown to the finish.

It was a slightly odd distance though. I thought it was a 10, but it was a touch longer I think.

In terms of results, it all gets sorted in zwiftpower.com

You need to register and connect strava, but all pretty simple.

  • There seem to be an awful lot of 60-odd kg racers in this list.

I wonder if the guy with all the red numbers is the bass player from Noiseworks?

Funny how none of the top riders have any actual race results.. :)

    One has a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mUSJ9cOcsY

  • Is a turbo trainer going to be quieter than rollers?

  • There seem to be an awful lot of 60-odd kg racers in this list.

They must be the fat ones. A couple of guys from Japan overtook me at 17w/kg yesterday :-/

  • It completely depends on the turbo, with my Elite Turbo Muin the loudest noise generate is my drivetrain, which is pretty quiet, i.e. I can have a normal conversation and listen to a tv at normal levels, when a friend came round to do a turbo session and bought his Tacx Vortex Smart I couldn't even hear him shouting next to me.... I'm sure @skinny once posted a video of his Lemond Revolution, which are loud enough to wake the dead...

  • Yeah it's so loud.
But it's actually fine in my new flat. It's wind noise so it doesn't really travel. I trained the other day and my girlfriend said it wasn't loud when she was in the room next door with door closed. She could watch tv fine.
