  • It was at that point you knew you were destined for London

  • Get the fuck out! There is no way I'd ever live in London.

I really want to get the hell away from Brighton. Choice is forrin or t'north.

    Fuck London. City of cunts.

  • Says the man who lives in Brighton, a distillation of London?

  • Every Nero I've ever walked past stinks of burnt coffee. I keep walking.

When I'm left in the terrible predicament of only having access to a Nero, Costa, or Starbucks (like at a train station or something), I always go for Nero for some odd reason. I refuse to go into Starbucks, just hate everything about it, and the last espresso I had there certainly didn't taste like coffee.

Do people reckon Costa is the superior of the three?

  • Costa flat white is the least offensive option out of everything available at that three, followed by a Nero Cappuccino (which is horrific, but effective).

    You'd really fit in here

  • Come t'north, the cunts are much friendlier.

  • But totally unintelligible.

I always found that Costa did all the prep well: cup warmed, pour timed well, decent (ish) looking creama etc but their beans just didn't taste of anything. Bland as fuck, hemce I always though that Nero was better as their beans at least had a generic coffee taste.

  • Testing new kit on Saturday

  • Dear Green have 990 likes on Facebook and are giving a 6 month coffee subscription to their 1000th liker (UK only). Only had their coffee in Glasgow cafés but it's good stuff.

  • ^^ Enjoy.

^^^ as for nero etc I've reached the point I'd rather have no coffee than theirs. Saves on repeated disappointments. And money.

  • If you get a My Waitrose card you get free machine coffee and newspapers for life!

Yeah I know it's not for the fancy people, but still worth noting.

  • ^^^ who got the 'dear green' 1000th like? I hit the button at the same time as every one else and it went from 999 to 1002 in one jump.

  • Rancilio- good points, the milk frother is much better than on my Factory 106, in that you can make good microfoam every time whereas it's a lot more hit and miss with the 106.

However, and whilst I grant that this may be the result of using a new grinder at the same time I'm finding it much harder to pull a decent shot.

It seems very unwilling to produce a shot with decent crema- and if you make the grind finer and/or tamp more firmly it just leaks around the edge of the portafilter rather than forcing the water through the puck.

With the 106 it takes one practice shot to dial it in and then pour multiple good ones.

So- a learning curve, any hints and tips welcomed.

  • Leaking around the edge of the portafilter? That sounds wrong. Maybe you need to replace the gasket…

Crema’s not a problem here. It’s dependent on a few things (type of bean, temp of shot, firmness of tamp - these can all alter the type/depth of crema), but I’m not particularly bothered about creating crema for the sake of it. It’s pretty and everything, but only a side effect.

  • It may be as simple as a gasket, anywhere in Londons famous London that stock them?

  • I generally don’t have to alter grind - maybe 1 step tighter for much darker roasts (e.g. typical Union vs typical HasBean). Dose is the main variable for me when deciding what I’m in the mood for - that’s in the context of the stock basket, and how much the puck is up against the shower screen. I’ve found it needs to be very intimately acquainted (fair bit of resistance engaging the portafilter) if going for a ristretto, as larger doses in larger baskets have failed to produce the same effect.

Dunno about London gasket stockists, sorry.

Mindful of this I filled the basket more than I was doing yesterday, clamped the PF in a bit tighter, and am enjoying a nice coffee (with no around the PF leakage) this morning.

    Bon.
