Probably a stupid question and forgive me for asking but I'm going to need to get a new stove top coffee maker, anything I should be looking for? Any particular brands to trust? Or are they much of a muchness.
I'm an occassional morning coffee maker, buying some ground beans from the coffee place on old compton st, so nothing spectacular is required..
Apologies if this has been asked before.

Just get an aeropress [/fanboy]. And get one from Prufrock on Leather Lane - still only £25 which is cheaper than online!

Corny - I've had expensive and cheap ones - the difference is in how long they last before you replace it. Preferably go for stainless stell - Bialetti is the standard for stovetop.
More important for the coffee is the method. About halfway down page 17 on this thread there was some useful discussion around that.

some of the cheap ones are rubbish and don't seem to work as well, my friend in spain who has a collection of them (various sizes depending on how many coffees needed) thew out the cheap copies as they either piss water everywhere dribble when you pour and have poor flow of coffee up through the screen.
just get a Bialetti.

this wonderful package arrived at work this lunchtime (less than 24 hours after online order) - picture won't upload when i rotate it for some reason.
quicker and less mess than the french press I was using. metal disc is a must as far as I can see, coffee puck just drops into the bin. barely any clean-up
Currently on attempt 5 with the jailbreak. One of my eyes has gone noticeably bigger than the other.

Any fans of café corretto? Got to like 'em when skiing in Italy but don't see them much in London. Perhaps I'll treat myself to a bottle of Grappa for Christmas.

I got a stainless steel one from the catering supply shop on Stoke Newington High St which I like. I'm not sure of the brand, but it works well enough. I couldn't find it with a quick google image search.
It doesn't get much use though since I bought a percolator.

Now there's a package to make your weekend. Don't make yourself poorly!
I've got a stovetop like this. First piece of coffee making kit I had. Still seems magical :)

I got an aeropress the other day too, what is this metal disc you speak of?
Aeropress is the first brewing method where I have actually been able to taste the difference that a slight change in technique makes. I made two cups at lunch today, for one I pressed the plunger further down - another inch or so? - and it was a lot more bitter then the less pressed one.

metal filter disc (bottom left in my pic)
hasbean sell 'em . it replaces the paper filters and is reusable .
something else to clean I guess but I don't reckon I'll use the papers.if anyone wants the paper filters which came with the aeropress let me know.

Found it now.
£12.50 seems a bit pricey, maybe not for what it is but compared to what it replaces, that'd buy 600 paper filters which would be about a years worth? Chances I'd lose/bend/somehow knacker that metal filter in a year? Pretty high I'd imagine.

I'm convinced I'd compost the metal bit. Papers work fine, just avoid any creasing.

buy little and often.
I have blatantly ignored this advise and now have a kilo of costa rican. cost me £13 (the chap who ordered it got about 8kg in total for other people, normally there are no problems but apparently today the courier lost the consignment so they sent a replacement order over by taxi, great customer service.
It is very nice, darker* than the Monmouth Blend. As you can see, I have fuck loads. If anyone near SE5 needs some beans, let me know, I'm sure we can come to some sort of "arrangement".
*not sure how best to describe it.
the two large containers are Costa Rican, the small square tub is an experimental blend (ran out of decent containers) of Monmouth Espresso blend and Costa Rican.

Anyone enjoying any particular single origins or filter blends from hasbean right now? Ordering later to see me thru Xmas, consumption will be high.
-
• #5041
I had Hasbean's El Salvador San Jose bourbon on the filter bar in the shop at the weekend and it was so sweet with bold ripe cherry. Lish.
Pourover, 18g, 250ml water, about 2 mins.

Will give it a go in the aeropress, cheers.

Christmas Blends both look interesting... can't wait to try them too.

At our office I think we order 1kg of coffee a week (5 bags) it's from Asda, and is butters. Is there somewhere that we could order from where it would be better/local/fair trade etc? The stuff we order atm is £10/kg so looking at a similar price band. For french presses.
We are in Kentish Town, so somewhere not too many miles away.

if you can get down to Camden there's the coffee roaster man on Delancey Street. Dunno about a tenner/kg but wont be far off for decent stuff
