is there anywhere in Brixton to buy beans?

Quick question. Just dusted off my Bialetti stove top and found the bottom chamber has white spots on the surface. It rubs off easily and is a fine powder. What is it and is it safe to use?
Mine also does this and it reappears when it's dry after it seems to have been washed off. I used it regularly for about 3 years without any noticeable side effects.*
I felt much better about it after looking at the state of the inside of my stove top kettle (glacial levels of scale despite using a filter)
*other than my basketball skillz strangely improved...

I get this too. I believe it's aluminium oxide (the equivalent to rust on steel). You just have to get into the habit of cleaning it out and leaving it to dry, which is hard when you have a fresh brew waiting for you.

Can you use a ready ground coffee with the aeropress?
Thinking of buying one, once payday roles around, but just deciding whether the porlex is necessary for me. -
• #4983
^ yes, but you should get better results with fresh ground

Thanks all! Did try a brew after cleaning it, tasted acidic and metallic. Cleaned it again and the whites spots are even worse. I should've added that l'm in HK where everything is filthy.

bought another 200g of Monmouth Espresso Blend. A friend told me about a group 7 of his friends (including him) that all by a kilo each from Coffee Plant on Portabello Road, as it's over £100 they get a 20% discount. Asked him to order me a kilo of the Costa Rican (he swears by it) should be less than £15 all in including postage. Just realised, I have no idea how I'll store it all, will have to drink a lot of coffee I suppose.
I have a kilner jar that holds the Monmouth 200g, in the bag, nicely so may just tip half the costa rican beans in there and use another plastic lock top tupperware container fo the rest in the bag they come in. Would that be a ridiculous idea?

Being in the trade I tend to stick to my mother's maxim "if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all" with regard to independent coffee businesses but..........Cunts!
So please, I am appealing to you, if you are walking past The Hatch on Bermondsey St, please walk up and order a 12oz extra hot dry gingerbread machiato. Oh, and tell them to get a move on.

Hasbean order looks like:
Aeropress
Metal Filter
espresso ground beansPorlex (is being gotten for xmas)
Should I get some scales of tut ebay to help accuracy?
-
• #4995
definitely
-
• #4996
I've yet to get scales but they are definitely on the cards, along with a thermometer and pouring metal jug thing as letting the water cool in a gravy boat is getting old.
That said, I have been very pleased with the dose so far. Scales can only help but I'm certainly enjoying each coffee now.
let me know how the metal filter compares over the paper ones.
-
• #4997
i'm guessing you could get away with a finer grind when using the metal filter as there would be less resistance than when using the paper ones?
also, bombcup - would mind allaying my bean storage fears from my previous post? ta
-
• #4998
I've not used the metal filter TBH but they have had good reviews. One more thing to wash up. I always used a gravy boat to pour with until I dropped it, strangely enough.
Airtight container in a dark cupboard is perfect. No fridge, no freezer, just buy little and often.
