Does anyone want some beans? I've got 500g of Climpson's The Baron arriving tomorrow or Saturday, but am going away in the middle of next week and there's no way I'll get through them. Free to anyone who can collect from SE London. DM if you fancy them.

How is that going for you?

Any Gaggia Classic owners here with a PID mod?
I've a classic on the way to me and about 10 years ago I had a dabble and managed to set up the brew temperature with a PID but never took the leap to getting the steam mode setup.
Wondering if anyone has a wiring diagram handy?

Usually drink espresso based but I want to give cold brew a go as my gf bought me a thing to make it in from Grind.
Should I go for a lighter roast than I use for espresso? For grinding is it similar to cafeteria?
Usually buy from James Gourmet

You can get away with using darker roast I found but if you’ve got beans you like use them and yes similar to cafeteria.

Yeah, pretty good! I'm a few kilos in and getting some really tasty coffee out of it. Just a load of basic espresso blends, nothing fancy or adventurous at this point (or any filter except for some decaf).
It's not making 'better' espresso than my Kinu but just presents the flavours a different way (clarity and brightness are the pretentious buzzwords at play). I can see how it'd really shine when I get some more fruit-forward beans or lighter roasts. It's also not that much quicker than handgrinding, especially if I slowfeed.
Overall, for 15mins wiring and ~£225 all in I'm really happy. It's solid, it lets me enjoy coffee, more than anything, I'm glad I won't feel like I'm missing out with shiny new grinder tech and SSP this and that. Zero regrets.
Edit: a lot of the enjoyment also comes from quality of life upgrades over handgrinders. So easy to remember/find different settings when swapping between brew methods. And dialling in new beans is infinitely less tedious.

Mr Shades stuff used to be open source back in the day so maybe see if any of his manuals floating around?

I think I’ve got it on a pdf open on my computer. Will have a look for it later.

Oh cool, that would be good!
I purchased a thermocouple, PID & brew SSR today on Prime so hopefully have that up and running over the weekend!

Would that work with the Rancilio Silvia?

Absolutely yes

Have you got a link please?

Take a look on coffee forums - plenty of knowledge there!
To pid the brew mode on the Gaggia it's so easy if you're handy in making some patch cables/crimping. The steam mode can be done easily enough but I gave up last time. Hoping to have another crack soon.
Can't imagine the silvia being much different. Auber sell a kit and I think their instructions are online somewhere.

Incurable drippy steam wand too, huh?
Love the pressure gauge placement. Yours really makes me want to paint/wrap/do something colourful with mine.

Person in the coffee shop
“Can I have an extra HOT latte please?”
Barista
“No, sorry I’m not going to ruin your drink. There is a costa just round the corner”My turn at the counter and the barista starts with
“I can’t run the risk of anybody hearing me screaming the milk and you can’t just boil the cup when it’s paper”
That’s why I go there. -

The decent ones are hard to find.
I am a big Django coffee fan. If you subscribe when they have a 30% off deal which happens every so often, it's stupid money for very good coffee (assuming you're happy drinking medium-light stuff).
