  • drinking java and go for a ride, nice…

  • i'll be up for that. i could then ride 3 laps of richmond with a headache and the shakes

  • yeah good plan! Could be a good laugh

  • I've done a soho coffee crawl before; Flat White, Milk Bar, F&W, Sacred, Voodoo cart et al.

Makes you ride like a twat for the next two hours until the caffeine crash comes along which feels worse than a whitey.

    Fun until that point.

  • Coffee OD was the official reason given for me breaking my back. No cafe crawl for this fella.

  • High doses can seriously screw up your judgement.

Spiders on caffeine have trouble even building a web: http://www.coffee.co.uk/spiders.html
No wonder I don't get much code written after 11am!

  • Tim, you going to any of the rollapaluza gigs - could leave a stovetop with Winspar for ya if you like

  • Sharkstar, I got myself this machine from the same place 2 years ago, I love it. You really need a decent grinder to pair with it though, iberital mc2 or rancillio rocky are a good bet so that's £120 or £150 respectively!

Cheers mate - that clinches the deal for me!

  • i finally managed to get a stove top bialletti after using a caffatiere for a while, but was wondering how many times you have to use it before its good enough to drink it? (because the pamphlet says use it a couple of times but pour the coffee away, but how many times is a couple?)

  • i think it could possibly be a pair of times or perhaps a brace? or maybe double the times it would take to make a brew?

  • "If you can correctly guess how many sweets I've got in my pocket, you can have both of them".

  • "If you can correctly guess how many sweets I've got in my pocket, you can have both of them".

Is that what you said to your missus on the first date Jim?

Replace 'sweets' for 'plums' and you've got it.

  • And now that you've rubbed off on her, she speaks with a plum in her mouth?

  • this is a coffee thread not about teabagging.

  • My holy grail: http://www.ristrettocoffee.com/shop/Scripts/prodView.asp?idProduct=25

I think I'm going to continue using my gran gaggia with shop-ground beans until I buy a Zessenhaus grinder and a Bialetti Brikka. Then I'll save up for the Rocky and Silvia.

  • I drink colombian or costa rican roast & ground coffee from Aldi. I overbrew it in a cafetiere. I do this so that when someone makes me a really good coffee, I will appreciate the flavour more. For you see, if you drink good coffee all the time, then you don't really have much better to look forward to.

  • Monmouth Americano with a dash of milk plus a brownie today - weirded me out a little but dang! that's good coffee. Will never have a cappuccino from there again - why would you with the crema on the Americano?

    Zen...

  • Just thought I'd revive this with:

    hmmm.....

  • I've been drinking freshly roasted (well... it was fresh in Jamaica 2 days ago) Jamaican Blue Mountain No.1 coffee from Portland, bought for not much money (well... not much compared to how much it costs here), brewed here in Birmingham in a cafetiere. I would have ground it myself but I don't have a grinder.

What can I say? We're walking / cycling cliches.

    Good spot :D

  • Oh my..

  • Agreed. Definitely need a good grinder FIRST. If you can't afford the machine and grinder, get the grinder first and use it for brewed coffee while you save for the machine. Your coffee will taste goood.

Silvia is about the best entry level machine available. All made from commercial grade parts so totally servicable, reliable and modifiable. There is also a massive wealth of resources, how-to's and advice on the internet for getting the best out of it.

I have to say though, don't bother getting into home espresso if you don't have the inclination, time and patience to learn the theory and skills for making good shots. Given enough time you will master these and be making the best coffee outside of Flat White, but it takes patience to begin with.

Here's a good place to start:

Ok folks I have the Rancilio Sylvia and Rocky combo, we can meet at my place for coffee making sessions.

Aglerian Coffee Store do a coffee of the month £5 for a half kilo, which has been a great way for me to discover new beans each month.

who fancies a saturday morning dabbling and mucking about with coffee [and fuck off you lot, it's not a 'coffee morning' before you start]

maybe bombcup could join us like some kind of coffee yoda and give us a few tips and pointers

quite happy to have it at my gaff - anyone fancy it?

I had already been suggesting we meet at my place in Kew before and after the Saturday training rides in Richmond Park.
