wow. some serious coffee geekdom going on here.
i recently quit instant for good for the sake of my guts and am using a little 4 cup cafetiere at work (been using stovetop espesso machine or cafetiere at home for years). i buy small bags of different ground coffees from monmouth and keep it in the fridge at work. 3 mugs a day of that and i get though a little bag a week. works for me.
used to have this crazy thing my mum gave me when i was at uni, like a giant espesso pot consisting of two big glass bowls set up like an hour glass... it had a little chain thing in it too... i forget exactly how it worked. anyone know what i'm talking about?
sorry if it's already been mentioned. late to thread. bad dooks.

Dooks, good work buying only what you will use in a week but keep your next bag of coffee out of the fridge. The humidity in there does the coffee no good at all and it will pick up aromas from other stuff that's in there. Just keep the bag sealed, out of the light and you'll be good.

Here's a good how-to explaining Cona type vacuum brewing

whats your thoughts on keeping beans in the freezer mr bombcup?
-
• #284
My thoughts are 'it's wrong, bdw'.

Yeah freezer is good because the conditions are totally inert. Lots of blind cupping has been done comparing beans frozen for up to 3 months with fresh beans and it has mostly been impossible to differentiate.
Freeze your beans in bags containing a weeks supply so you can just remove what you need. Allow them to reach room temp before use, standard freeze only once rule applies.
Well worthwhile if you have sporadic access to fresh beans or if you home roast. (did I just admit that?)

I still think it's wrong :p

blind cupping…
I think I got arrested for that once

Cup is definitely one noun which should not be verbed.
My apologies.

Mr Bombcup, I was thinking of getting me a Rancilio Silvia espresso machine from Drury Lane coffee shop - link below. What do you reckon?

Lidl sell whole beans. I'm on a budget so I'll score some take em out the packet and jump up and down on them. Gotta be the cheapest option?

I'm now living in Burger King.. free coffee refills.. no rent. THAT'S the cheapest option.

Burger King coffee tastes of butterscotch - only not in a good way...

Sharkstar, I got myself this machine from the same place 2 years ago, I love it. You really need a decent grinder to pair with it though, iberital mc2 or rancillio rocky are a good bet so that's £120 or £150 respectively!

Agreed. Definitely need a good grinder FIRST. If you can't afford the machine and grinder, get the grinder first and use it for brewed coffee while you save for the machine. Your coffee will taste goood.
Silvia is about the best entry level machine available. All made from commercial grade parts so totally servicable, reliable and modifiable. There is also a massive wealth of resources, how-to's and advice on the internet for getting the best out of it.
I have to say though, don't bother getting into home espresso if you don't have the inclination, time and patience to learn the theory and skills for making good shots. Given enough time you will master these and be making the best coffee outside of Flat White, but it takes patience to begin with.
Here's a good place to start:

who fancies a saturday morning dabbling and mucking about with coffee [and fuck off you lot, it's not a 'coffee morning' before you start]
maybe bombcup could join us like some kind of coffee yoda and give us a few tips and pointers
quite happy to have it at my gaff - anyone fancy it?

Sounds good, only trouble is I live in Northants and commute mon-fri, but I fancy a chilled saturday morning in the city so I'll do my best to come down.

I can picture it...you'll all be wired by elevenses, riding in frantic circles in the street and drooling over the next brew. No different to any other saturday?
Grinding coffee whilst camping in your bus must make you happy. I've gotta fix mine before next summer.
