Ta, I'll have a look.

I have the metal portafilter holder upgrade, the holder just pulls out. didn't it come with the replacement grounds bin for bulk grinding? you need to be able to remove it to switch them

Basically I think what I'm after is Norwich-by-sea (and possibly in the South West).

@StevePeel 's "recipe" is banging.
18g of coffee, 200g of water, and inverted.
30g of water for 30 seconds, then remaining water added and let it steep for another 90 seconds. Turnover and plunge.

Sidenote to that, does changing quantities change the amount of time for extraction? In my head, if you're using the same brew method and same ratio, the extraction time is the same, you just change water and coffee quantities.
Eg, can I use the above Aeropress recipe with 22.5g of coffee and 250g of water? If not, why not, and that's what I do with French Press, regardless of actual amounts, I keep the ratio always 3:50 and use 4 minutes (30 second bloom and 3.5 minutes brew).

Nice one! I'm getting pretty good results with this method which is very similar.
http://coffeecollective.blogspot.ie/2010/01/updated-aeropress-brewing-method.html
The only difference is I'm using 16g of coffee and 170g of water and bypassing the 30 seconds of bloom. I had thought the bloom was unnecessary for the inverted method but i'll give that a shot. I'll also up the coffee water ratio.
Any idea of grind size for this? Also any stirring for this method? I'm presuming you stir after the steep?
-
• #14134
Not sure about stirring, @StevePeel should be able to shed more light. Your ratio is actually higher, it's 0.094, whereas 18/200 is 0.09 so if you upped water to 200g you should put in 18.8g of coffee with your method.

I find it needs a stir as all the grinds have a tendency to float on top otherwise. Just a gentle agitation to get it all mixed freely.
-
• #14136
Yeah I stir, bit like the Hoffmann french press method.

Burnham Market then ;p

You will need to coarsen the grind very slightly because otherwise you would need to either increase the pressure to press in the same time or press at the same pressure for longer, both of which will increase extraction. Same if it was a regular pour over, the ratio remains the same but contact time increases so you need to coarsen it up to compensate.

Steve for your method what sort of grind size are you using? And do you stir after bloom of just at the end of the steep?
-
• #14140
I stir straight after adding the bloom water and again when I've added the final volume. Grind size is difficult to convey, its slightly coarser than I use for pourover. I can feel my puny abdominal muscles when I press it. Basically make sure you're bang-on accurate with your water and coffee weights and your timings then adjust the grind until it tastes neither too concentrated or too watery.

Is there a coffee grind size equivalent of one of these?

If only!

How long are you pressing for?

I got given a hand grinder for Christmas. I like it but unfortunately on the finest grind settings it's just incredibly slow; like it'll take me 20 minutes to grind 18g of beans. I think that the ceramic burr part is getting jammed up somehow and the grounds are not falling through as they should; they just get pushed around and stick to the ceramic.
Any suggestions? Am I grinding too fine (for an espresso machine)? Do I just need to disassemble the whole thing and give it a good clean? Is that just the way that it is?
It's one of these: https://www.anothercoffee.co.uk/products/item150862.aspx I like the design of it aside from this problem
