the most often stolen bikes are sub 200 pound mtn bikes. cheaper bikes are way easier to sell, and raise less suspicion, and are not locked up as well.
if you think reading about it depressing, try keeping a blog about them!

chris crash i meant in light of people getting things stolen from right in front of the pub and the management being well aware of it.
couldnt agree more. i'll be calling the landlord this week and telling him what i think of his 'late drink' policy. -

i wouldnt be to hostile about these things its just what makes sense to me... if he has to keep them closed or shut down his bar, he should warn people of the danger, or install CCTV.

I think it´s been mentioned somewhere before, possibly this thread. The owner sometimes tells people to get their bikes before the lock in.
Someone suggested they´d put a sign up outside, but that could get them a brick through the window... Don´t think you want to mess with proffesional bike thieves

i want to mess with professional bike thieves.

i'm down, got camera & film gear.
in regards to the bait, is it not possible to get a shit bike and make it look really nice and tasty? that's what i'm trying to do with one of mine at the moment, tho time will tell as to whether i'm successful or not!
i have no problems with the threat of violence either. if i see someone stealing a bike and i want o make a citizen's arrest, and said thief attacks me... well then that's self defense right?
-
• #108
False imprisonment if you restrain them possibly? I'm no expert... let's ask our resident bobby, stevo_com? What DO we do if we see someone we think we could detain for arrest? Or Citizens' arrest (I think that's gotta be a myth... after all this aint a republic, we're not citizens, we're subjects blah blah)
Seriously though. What can you or can't you do to scum like this, if you want to go the legal route? I know what I'd WANT to do mind...

Compile the facts about bike crime and mail them to Alice Fisher?

I feel your pain as mentioned before i had it too a few weeks back. I understand your anger but i dont think directing any sort complaint to the landlord will really make much difference I know others that have had there bike/parts stolen and have approached the pub an its sad to say .but your answer will be that you lock your bike there at your own risk and its not they're (the pubs) problem. The George (for whatever reason) is becoming increasingly popular, a couple of weeks back there was a que to get in at 10.00!!! and the pub was locked by 10.30! this is a residential pub and somewhere i used to go for a quiet drink. I know its totally the wrong attitude but as long as there are people coming through the doors and the tills keep ringing the wont worry about the odd bike being stolen. Shitty i know and certainly not the right attitude. i dont know, maybe im wrong

I tried to steal a bike on Sunday: wait! Don't lynch me! To explain:
there's been this old Puch bike outside of Leicester square station for well over three months now (to my knowledge.) One of the wheels is bent as if someone has properly stamped on it, and the rest of the bike is rotting away. So much to say that I don't think anyone is laying claim to this bike; it's just litter.
Any way, I tried to saw the D_Lock and got nowhere. Also tried the Bic pen trick that someone suggested on here; no joy.
I've asked Westminster council if they can help me remove it, but had no response. It's a shame; this nice old bike will rust away, get pointlessly vandalised and add to the general sruffiness of the West End. -

Chris and OCD, don't get me wrong, i'm well aware that you leave a bike locked up outside any pub at your own risk. And i wasn't about to shout or be hostile towards anyone. For whatever reason, I had a feeling that what happened to me on Friday night was not in isolation and decided to google 'The George Pub, Dalston & bike theft' on Saturday to see if anything came up. That led me to this forum and the various stories attached to the pub. The idea that a Landlord will not erect signs or make regular announcements when the curtains are drawn etc when he is aware that bikes and bike parts are being stolen on a regular basis from outside his pub is just plain wrong. I'm still a customer of his pub and he needs me to feel good about the place. He definitely needs to do more to prevent this from happening to anyone else. I lost about £500 worth of components on Friday. One of the boys at Condor told me a mate of his had ALL of his Campag Record stripped from his bike outside The George a few weeks ago. Seems to be quite a trend. i'll get a taxi next time i go.

Am I right in thinking that all the stealing happens during the ' lock in' ? If so, thats prob why the landlord wont mention it publicly as it might draw attention to illicit afterhours drinking, no?

Had my seat and seat post stolen from outside the George last week......I even glued the allen key head and they still got it!!!

I dont think its your classic "lock in" just the agreement that the pub will draw their curtains and shut the doors over after a certain time to keep the residents happy. -

You still have to apply for the licence which is costly and time consuming. On a practical front, most pubs dont really want to be open all thru the night - imagine the carnage.

If thats the case, then the said landlords are nor going to comply will any legal procedures. Best leave bike at home if youre planning a drink down the George.

It's not really the landlord's responsibility what happens on the public thoroughfare outside his pub, though, is it? Plus you're assuming that he knows that his pub is in a blackspot - he might think it's par for the course for Dalston.

It isn't too much to ask that the bike lock up area is lit with a simple motion sensor flood light. Even with the curtains drawn, anyone by the window would notice the light going on. While it isn't the landlord's responsibility, he should look after his patrons by providing some security measures.

I wouldn't leave anything in Dalston, apart from maybe a cloud of smoke as I disappeared quickly as possible.
what's so great about this boozer then?
God its so depressing reading about the bike thefts in London. Ive had one stolen ( Hackney) and another attempted (left the frame twisted). they werent v expensive bikes - about £100 second hand - but its still pretty shitty to find a twisted D-lock in place of your loved transport. The bus ride home after loosing a bike is awful.
thing is, with a birthday coming up soon i'm debating to spend money on good fixie - but after reading this thread I'm wondering wether i shold just stick to cheapo bikes that are less likey to get robbed - and when they do - at least i havnt lost so much financially.
