Thieves are lazy (although if they really want it, they'll get it).
Disagree. Opportunists and smalltime thieves are lazy but 'professional' thieves are snide fuckers that know all the tricks in the book and would do anything to get what they want. Look at my post on p1 RE guys in van steeling motorbike.
Bike thieves nowadays don't just walk around with hairclips and a screwdriver, they have hydraulic(ironically stolen) powertools/cutters that go through £50+ locks in seconds. I know it and I've seen it -

I aint getting involved in no fisticuffs, but I do like the idea of building up a 'theft portfolio'.
This reminds me - chris you might find this food for thought - has anyone had experience of the brick lane bike theft crew?
I caught one fellow checking how my bike was locked up. He picked it up, examined the lock that was chaining it to a lamp post, tagged it with a little magnet (my bike is steel), and made a variety of arm gestures to a top floor window across bethnal green road, i think on the left hand side of the road leading to the polo courts. Well, he waved his arms in a golf-swing motion in the general direction of the opposite side of bethnal green road.
^^ this was right at the top of Brick lane, I was in the cafe on the right hand side (when your facing towards the polo courts).
Thing is, the guy wasn't a thief, he was just one of the bums that hang around brick lane.
Now this is a lot of conjecture, but it seems to me like the thieves 'employ' the tramps (god knows what they give them) to tag stealable bikes. I guess it makes sense for them, less risk of getting caught in the act.

@ Chris yes, i reckon that's about right. but before anyone dons their knuckle-dusters and knocks on the door, it could just have been the mad rambling movements of a tramp.
The magnet however was very very real. Still got it in fact.

I'll help.
Thing is, if we put a 'shit' bike out they won't bite. If we put a tasty one there, we may lose it.
It's all about the evidence innit. Maybe we should get Stevo along... Might have better luck getting 5-0 to get involved with his help, maybe?

I noticed from the guy at polo a couple of weeks ago trying to flog us a ridgeback. He was working with an older (german?) guy who was doing the nicking and had a bag full of tools. He was working his way up to newington green and the other guy who did the selling was picking the bikes up after he cracked them.

I am in. Let us know when you are meeting up.
And fair play to Chris for getting that map together. This story needs to get taken to the press and the police will then have to start doing something about it. Maybe the map needs some more filling out before then but if everyone puts on where they had parts stolen from (smaller parts too) then I think it will look pretty busy in no time.
Something has to happen. The police don't care and we need to make them.
EDIT: P.S Hello to the bloke in the horrible green thing in that photo who was at the same party as me on the weekend. It was a good one. Until I ended up sleep walking into my new girls flatmates bedroom later in the evening and apparently telling her to 'move over darling...'. Jesus.

It reminds me about one that was setup for potholes in the road, they would put down when it was reported and how long it took to fix. Worked wonders as soon as the press got hold of it. -

i have been meaning to get the blog bigger exposure, but my life is kind of focused at getting back into london at the moment once that is all green lights i will be doing a lot more with the blog, just started chattin with a guy who is inventing a device so that when a lock is messed with it alerts the owner, some kinda wireless seismograph thing he was not to spefic as he hasn't patented it yet. he also has some cctv footage of his bike being nicked.
and stop trying to pull your girls flat mate. ;)

I was at the George on Friday night for the first time. Stupidly decided to ride there rather than get a taxi. Came out at 11.30 to find my Condor Classico stripped of its componets. Frame and wheels were well locked but they got everything else. Funny thing is that I noticed the drawn curtains at a certain point in the evening and the slightly ominous feeling it gave me. Turned out to be a very expensive evening. Maybe they should set up some CCTV?

Was in there on Friday, but we left when they drew the curtains. There were still people outside then and it was about 10:30.
Keep meaning to tell them to put some signs up warning people.
-
• #98
why do they draw the curtains?
-
• #99
cos its a residential area. And they stay open a little.

i meant in light of people getting things stolen from right in front of the pub and the management being well aware of it.

I'm up for helping. Anything to catch these wankers. Maybe if enough people get busted it'll stop.
I really think we need to educate people on how to lock up bikes properly, too. Thieves are lazy (although if they really want it, they'll get it).
