  • 8 miles each way 5 times a day and it takes almost half the time than TFL [bus+tube]

  • Anywhere from 8 - 15 miles each way plus around another 25 through out the day between meetings.
Plus what ever I choose to ride on the way home.

    Life is good :]

  • nine-ish miles each way.

  • Btwn 13 - 20 miles a day round trip depending on how energetic I am feeling.

  • sorry i wasn't being serious about the 17 miles each way thing.

I generally do about 20 - 25 miles a day as I live my small world life in London.

That goes up to about 32 miles for Westies..

isn't it lovely not to have to ever get the tube and shit..

  • What is a commute? Is it something to do with having a job?

  • pajamas, when do you go to westies??? :)

  • What is a commute? Is it something to do with having a job?

    I commute to the pub.

  • pajamas, when do you go to westies??? :)

I'm about to be back in a big way dude.....! Starting next week or maybe even this week!

  • 35 mile daily round trip for the last 3 months, and yet I seem to have less bike fitness than I did a year ago. I smoked then too, WTF?

  • Anything over 15 each way regularly I would have to think about. 35 R.T Brett! Thats as much as Tramps, you're both mad but must be fit as fuck now.

  • 9 miles each way Lewisham to Euston but if its a nice morning I'll cut across to Victoria and round Hyde Park for a bit of variety + some greenery and car-free riding and winding down before work.

  • I drink a pint of milk before I set out and i find this starts to sweat through the pores by about the 6 mile mark.

I'd be seriously worried if I started sweating milk after riding 6 miles.

  • 7 miles each way.

My biggest was a 13 mile uphill ride in Toronto. Pretty tough but the ride home was lovely every day.

  • Can someone make a poll on this? It'd be nice to think people commute further than me so I can stop feeling sorry for myself when I climb the hills of forest hill every day on the way back from Knightsbridge

Well...I used to ride from the bottom of Sydenham high street to Bloomsbury each day, so I sympethise! That hill can be a bastard when your hungover. I did develop thighs made of pure crystal palace tho, so there is some benefit ;)
However last year I cunningly moved house to Dulwich, thereby halving my commute - distance and altitude...

  • I think with many of the general public the distance is not the thing they consider when discussing their commute. The measure they concentrate on is how long it takes.

If you ask how long is your journey to work invariably they will give the duration, not the physical length.

My suggestion would be to consider the speed an average person can go without breaking into a serious sweat and then consider how far they could go in 30 or 45 minutes.

My journey time from work has nearly halved from just under an hour to just over 30 minutes since giving up public transport and using a bike (though a shower at the other end is obligatory). I think its about 8 or 9 miles each way.

  • from hipsterville to work its about 3.

  • Was doing around 250 Km per week but it is 90 degrees plus at the moment in the Balearics, so that's dropped to 0.
If you are going to have covered cycleways make sure the glass can be easily cleaned on the outside.

  • Was 24 miles each way a year ago, 15 miles each way last year, and from September this year will be 12. Mind you, my new school is in Chiswick, so it'll mean I can get to West End drinks about 3.30!

  • My commute is about 10 miles in total. The job is 40 to 60. Don't work Wednesdays though.

  • I remember watching an early 90's documentary about urban transport in Vietnam. The goverment were going to great efforts to get people off mopeds and bicycles and encourage the use of buses!

Im not sure how it ended up for vietnam, but the planners saw bicycles and hugeley popular mopeds as old fashioned and uncivilised.

You should do some thorough research on favoured existing commuting/transport methods in South Korea.

You must remember that that cycle transportation will only fly with a select group of people. And ample public transport, particulary mass transit as has been so successful in Japan & Hong Kong is seen as the best solution to transportation in busy successful modern asian cities.

4 miles I think is the golden number for acceptable bike commuted for a wide group of people. But I strongly reccomend that you only consider this for residential areas of any modern heavily populated asian city.

There simply wouldnt be enough room for everyone on the roads otherwise!

  • Top of Shooters Hill down to Old Street = 10 .5 miles
and the same back up at the end of the day ...
5 days a week - rain or shine - man and boy - etc
Better than the train though ... thats not civilised traveling

  • isn't it lovely not to have to ever get the tube and shit..

Ohhhhh yes! I took the tube from Embankment to Parsons Green last Friday (because I was on a rest day, and because there was actually a queue to get into Holborn station), and it took about twice the time it would have by bike. And it kept being delayed for all kinds of stupid reasons, and there were loads of loud smelly people, and I could feel the sweat dripping down my back, and neck, and cleavage. (Employers should have to provide showers for people who use the tube!)

I got off at the other end and vowed never to get on a tube train again. And as luck would have it, the chap I was meeting gave me a bike, so I got to ride that home, and didn't even have to worry about buses!

The moral? Don't take the tube.

  • 25 miles each way at least four times per week. it takes about 80 minutes and at rush hour is quicker than driving, never mind public transport!

  • About 4.5 miles each way. But with the wind in Amsterdam it often feels like double that! Still much nicer than a car/bus/tram.
