  • This might be useful. If not it's got some real perty maps (with sliders) to demonstrate commuting times by bike:
    my society
    About halfway down the page.

  • 8-10 miles each way, depending on whether I go straight through town or drop down to the river and go along embankment.

  • 0.75 miles each way - on foot. Really builds up those cycling muscles.

  • used to do 15 up hill there, 15 down hill home

now i walk from london bridge to strand, not as much fun :(

  • 15miles each way, nice and rolling with the mix of hills both ways, and the wind helps me on the way home if im lucky, and when im not lucky its into the wind all way to work! :(

  • It's usually 20 - 25 miles most days and a little more some other days. I live in SE London and go across town to South Ken., K'bridge or Bayswater. Feels pretty routine nowadays, but back in 2000 I used to commute 4 miles each way from Ealing to Hammersmith and it used to completely knacker me out.

  • About a mile these days, or 10min on the bike - do I get a prize? I used to have an early morning 8 mile commute by the sea. I kind of miss it to be honest.

  • i have been involved in 'new city building'.

here is me spouting off for what its worth.

i reckon the best thing i have seen recently on city building was that short video on copenhagen that tommy posted. i have not been there but it looks great.

i do about 40k per day on the bike in london east end. and i think if the city planners want to encourage cycling the trick is to reduce car speeds. safety is the issue.

    secondly density.

los angeles sprawls and there the car is king. new york (manhattan) and most european cities are more densily populated and many more people cylce.

thirdly you gotta ask what your client wants to acheive.

central london prospers at the moment because (amongst other things) all the transport infrastructure is concentrated there (and the public transport is subsidised out of general taxation).

but because of that the suburbs (and even the provinces) and its local businesses tend to suffer / fail / remain small.

so if your client wants control and a strong central business district then subsidised public transport should be provided.

if your client wants to empower its people and keep matters local then less (public) transport infrastructure and more cycling should be provided.

so for more cycling i reckon its safety, higher densities and power to the people.

i dont think its a question of fitness. the human body adjusts.

    here endeth the lesson !!

    good luck.

  • Have you been to South Korea? Nobody, absolutely nobody cycles there. Its a shame as they have some serious pollution problems in Seoul. So your concept would be revolutionary.

  • 18 miles each way, 2 or 3 times a week

  • 5km each way. Is about perfect as we don't have a shower and I don't get a smell on :)

  • 7 miles each way

  • 5miles. Wish I'd moved a bit further west now.

  • 12m each way, 4 times a week. Takes about 50mins.

I did it once on a road bike in about 38mins, but I jumped every light and nearly killed myself in the process. That's why I ditched the computer. Beating my personal best is just not that important.

  • 2.2km each way every day to work. 'I think I need to get up earlier and do a lap of Richmond Park in the mornings' grumbles the lazy git behind the computer!

I do a further 2km each way of an evening when I go and see my better half.

  • 6.5 miles each way. Some nice hills too for that bit extra

  • I commute doing a round trip of 14 miles each day, my girlfriend does 25!

  • This has been really useful by the way everybody, thanks a lot for the insight.

  • well, thanks for finally getting back to us

  • 16miles to work for me.

  • This has been really useful by the way everybody, thanks a lot for the insight.

living in Japan, so not too far away, i might be able to give some insite into the kinds of bikes people ride in Asia.

95% of all bikes are singlespeed beasts, which get cycled about 5/10 minutes to the nearest train station.

a city in Asia based on cycling would be awesome, but most people just arnt into it. many people work from 8am - 8pm, and they are so tired, the last thing they wanna do is cycle far.

it also rains as much, if not more than England.

the idea sounds awesome though, good luck!

  • Can someone make a poll on this? It'd be nice to think people commute further than me so I can stop feeling sorry for myself when I climb the hills of forest hill every day on the way back from Knightsbridge

  • 3 miles each way. anymore would require a shower afterwards, i reckon

  • 8000miles each way with a lunch break course around the 14,000mi mark just so I can stay on top of my training requirements.

  • 17 miles each way, rain or shine, no showers.

I drink a pint of milk before I set out and i find this starts to sweat through the pores by about the 6 mile mark.

I have recently been given a surprise promotion and along with it my own office.
