Commuting Distances...

  • Whitechapel to Victoria, a bit over 5 miles each way. Door to door, it takes about the same time as the District line, but is infinitely more pleasant.

It was raining too hard today, so I took the tube to work... the first time since I got my bike 2 weeks ago. It nearly broke my heart.

  • next time I think you'll brave it cg5154 - occasionally the rain absolutely tips down and you squint into it and curse it but I promise you still feel 10 times better than doing the journey on the tube.

  • You must remember that that cycle transportation will only fly with a select group of people. And ample public transport, particulary mass transit as has been so successful in Japan & Hong Kong is seen as the best solution to transportation in busy successful modern asian cities.

The weather in lots of Asian countries is too painful to even stand stationary in, let alone cycle in. Especially during the summer, when it's 40 degrees and 100% humidity, and the air-conditioned subways and buses are nice and cool. Also, I seriously doubt many employers in Asia provide shower facilities.

    Amen to that.
    14 miles a day
    5 days a week

Will I still feel 10 times better when I arrive at a dinner engagement weighing 5 extra pounds, my hair all lank and stringy, and squelching water from my shoes with every step?

Besides, I'm a scaredy-cat and I prefer to err on the side of caution. Rain like we had today feels too dangerous to ride in...

    ...

Yep - you won't necessarily look better but dem's de breaks..

in terms of safety : fixed + a bit slower than usual + hellavisibility - maybe a luminous poncho or summat, i dunno..

also you might decide to ditch the heels on a day like today..I normally do.

  • Seven miles each way for me, although in reference to CG5154 it does prove rather tiring when one has to pour water out of ones shoes upon arrival.

  • on arrival is when the real cycling starts. You guys have it easy :)

  • 5 there, 5 back for me. or 30 if I take the scenic route home via... er most of london.

I'd love to see some of the blueprints superprecise, this sounds fucking cool. Best of luck!

  • The moral? Don't take the tube.

Unless the journery is 10 miles plus, it took me only 37 minutes to get from Wimbledon to King's Cross on the Northern whether cycling over to King's Cross took me 66 minutes.

Bus or car would've take fuckage, tube is the fastest public transport so far, unless your destination is only a couple stop away.

    almost forget - I commute 22 miles a day.

Point taken - but I'm not sure if it applies to every journey. My current commute is from Tulse Hill to Southall (17ish miles) and takes exactly an hour. I'm not on the tube (actually, your point was just for the tube, wasn't it?), so I think I'd probably have to sit through a very long bus journey, and possibly a tube too, to get me to Paddington where I can get the high speed train. And then there's a 10-15 minute walk at the other end. I reckon it would take nearly 2 hours in all, but I've never actually tried it.

  • 11 miles each way direct. not counting the endless "shortcuts" i take. making it like 20 miles each way. oh wait...

  • Tube is only quick for long distances if it is direct. Throw in one or two changes and it soon increases your journey time.

  • So what's the worst conditions you've commuted in.

In a spree of utter stupidity I decided to commute during the winter in Toronto and ended up doing 7 miles at -17c including about 50 metres sideways.

  • I lived in Pulmstead for nearly two years. Plumstead high street is in pretty bad condition and I had to ride through that every day.

  • I deserved that.

You do know that there is no "b" in Plumstead, right?

  • You do know that there is no "b" in Plumstead, right?

Yeah I do but for some reason put one in. I think I have a craving for some fruit at the moment but can't think what.

  • Would you like a nice fresh plumb?

quite right there, especially tube station like Bank, Tottingham Court Road, Oxford Circus which add an extra half hour trying to get to another tube line in the maze of mess.

damn those old independent line before it become part of the Underground!

  • Now that it's school holidays my bus takes me door to door, literally, in about 30-40 mins, costs me 90p on my lobster and get a guaranteed seat. however I still rides me bike, takes me 15-20 mins to do 5 miles and guarantees my arrival time.

Cycling in Korea will be a little warmer than blighty, innit?

  • Only in the summer. In the winter it would likely be colder I believe.

  • does anyone have any idea how far it is from victoria to camden? my girlfriend lives there and i fancy cycling there as i hate public transport.

  • maps.google.com is your friend...

  • 5 miles each way in about 20 minutes
