  • [QUOTE] Uncle Buck I so wish I kept your Gazelle! [QUOTE]

..and very kind it was of you to sell it to me Tel! I've made some of the adjustments you recommended since: replaced the seat post (now Chorus), headset (Super Record), put some Athena pedals and replaced cables and bar tape. Looking really nice and I think once I get a new saddle, the Gazelle will be even better than when you sold it to me - and it was already something special then. I'll try and post some photos soon.

Hope your Chorus groupset hunt is nearly complete.

  • Snoops,

The Professional was Batavus' Champion Mondial contender, both in the market and in racing.

Except that the Gazelle was used by half the amateur peloton and Batavus only by one team.
And Gazelle supplied bikes to some pro teams. Okay, Batavus also, but not on the same level.
Doesn't have anything to do with the bike though, these were about the same.

  • So could the respray have been for a rider who wanted batavus but was sponsored by gazelle?

Or is it just some guy who had a batavus and wanted to make it look like a Gazelle?

  • Did Gazelle ever make any touring bikes?

  • Did Gazelle ever make any touring bikes?

  • That quite an old mixte then? No cantis or seat stay pannier mounts.

  • Gazelle makes/ made MAINLY commuting and touring bikes.
    Just a few race bikes.

Canti bosses were used from the late 1980's on touring / randonneur bikes.
Before that, only on CX bikes and a few on tandem.

Zieleman's version is a very nice one.
This model used to be equipped with caliper brakes (first centrepull, later side pull).
Carriers and fenders were attached to the dropout eyelets, brake bridge and chain stay bridge.

If you're looking for a high-end touring frame with all braze-ons, you've got to look for a Champion Mondial Randonneur (531c), Randonneur Trophy or Formula Randonneur.

  • Anyone have a high end touring frame? 60-62?

  • As above but a 56/67? Mercian vincitore to swap

No Gazelle, but from a well known Dutch trekking bike builder Frank Groot:

    Quite pricy though.

  • That quite an old mixte then? No cantis or seat stay pannier mounts.

    The serial indicates 1977.

Don't forget Batavus did also supply to the Dutch National team, DC. They're raced to gold and world titles. However, it is true they were not as omnipresent as the Champion Mondial in both racing as in the streets.

  • Champi's simply rule..

  • Sorry to be so directly. Any chance, this frame is for sale Zielemann?

    Regards

    Reisberg

  • I have a super AA on the bay right now and there is a guy asking for the number that should be under the brakebridge?!?! never seen a number there, should there be one?

  • the gazelle frames are a dime a dozen here, the full c-record group on it however... :)

  • link to sale, fruit?

  • Names of riders on top tube: this was not painted, neither stickers.
It was done before clearcoating, with rub-off letters from a bookstore. Clearcoated afterwards. I think it was + DFL 25.- for normal consumers. More or less standard for amateur and pro team bikes.

Number under brake bridge: this should be the frame size.
Butterfly (plate) brake bridge had 2 numbers:

    • OLD rear wheel (120, 125)
    • Frame size c-t-t
Cinelli brake bridge (tube with square piece in centre): just frame size on the bottom. No guarantee that all frame have this.

Wishbone seat stays: same as Cinelli brake bridge. Some frames may have the frame size there. Some frames have no number at that spot.

Has nothing to do with fake or real.
Basically every real Gazelle has a frame number and a Gazelle name below BB-shell, except some very early models maybe.

About Theunisse: oficially, his name is GEERT Jan Thenisse.
But because he doesn't like it, he uses the name GERT Jan Theunisse.

More or less the same for Van Poppel (ex-Gazelle rider, Skil, PDM, Kwantum, etc..., now Directeur Sprotif Cervelo team). His real name is not JEAN Paul, but JAN Paul...

  • thanks cheese :)

Nice bike. Small correction: It is a Special, no Super.

  • ah yeah now you mention it, i am used to colnago's and campagnolo and they are always 'super' :)

  • Slightly OT buk do any of you guys from Holland know about Adorni bikes? im looking at one at the minute, but cant find anything out there really, sore throat advised me to seek advice from the orcles of dutch cycling....

  • A couple years ago I scored one, an Adorni. It was a nice bike/frame, but sadly it turned out to be broken in 2nd instance. Crack in the seat tube, possibly as result of wrong size post. The bike was specced with very nice Nuovo Gran Sport equipment and even though I did not have what I'd hoped I considered it money well spent.

  • In the 1970's Vroom & Dreesmann (V&D, department store) was selling cheap and ugly Adorni race bikes.
I think the most expensive bike was a Gran Sport equipped one.

But there could be more bikes with an Adorni brand / sticker.
