  • what are people opinions on these frames ? are they aa special quality or higher ?

    photo taken from http://fivenineclimber.com/bikes/gazelle/gazelle_pages.htm

  • It's a special jubileum edition, but i think it's on the base of an AA-Special. Fork looks a bit different though

  • Looks like Zieleman's garden set...

Fork crown was also used on later Gazelle frame sets 531c.
I've got such a fork for spare in red, for 59cm (approx) frame.
Gazelle text should have been the other way around IMHO.

his garden furniture does look nice ! dibs on the bench if he splits !

  • Anyone know what the headset is on the Gazelle frame Dicki posted or whether Gazelle issued a special 'Jubile' version celebrating 100 years of production?

  • 100 years ? campy record ? c-record ?

  • Apologies,
I did of course mean 100 years to celebrate the founding of the original company in 1892 by Willem Kölling and Rudolf Arentsen.

  • Special version Stronglight X12 headset with needle bearings.
It came together with the frame set.

  • Thank you for the information Dutch Cheese.
Are these headsets particularly rare or collectable? I've not seen any on the forum or Ebay.

  • My friend is in conversation with the guy and says that the seller wants 230 euro posted which gets:
the frame, campag headset, setapost and BB and a 3T stem and dropbars. I was thinking that seemed a little dear, i would've thought a competetive price to be more around the 175mark?

any info/guidance you guys have would be greatly recieved.

  • Thought I'd add a picture of my 1990 (or 1992) Gazelle AA Special. A mixture of period Campagnolo Croce d'Aune and Chorus except for the headset which is a Super Record with a few spacers. Ideally I would like to replace the Rolls saddle that is a touch tatty for my tastes with a black San Marco Regal, but apart from that and possibly a new seat pin it is just about complete.

    Nice colour!

Yes, that was exactly my bike ...but different colour. Mine was 25 euro for full bike, but frame appeared to be toast later. It is hard to say what usual going would be for such, but it sure looks nice. If condition is okay and it steals your heart you could of course always consider spending a little more than you initially planned.

    @DC
That's my garden set. Well spotted.

What sort of quality are we talking about with this kind of frame? The colour I think is what has attracted him, but maybe would be better off going for a frame we're sure about and getting it re-srayed a similar colour?

if anyone knows of a similar frame, 58/59 or 60 please pm me. thanks!

    Nahh man, I wish!
that would have been out of my budget, and I guess they're pretty rare anyway.
This frame was pretty cheap off marktplaats.

It is a long time ago for me, as the (broken) frame was trown away not long after I got it, but from what I recall and what I can see from your pic okay lugs are used and the technique with which it is put together is okay as well. I do still have the fork here and it kind of confirms that picture, but it is not explicitely light.

If you want to have another frame painted in that colour including the chromed detailling it will sure set you back more than what the Adorni cost.

Is that the strangly blueish painted 50cm for the bargainous price ?
    Very good deal.
Internal cable routing is pretty rare and only for the 1st 753 frames.
    Hope that it stays okay.
Be extremely careful with shotblasing as you may go through it.

  • Yeah it is. 75 euro I couldn't believe it!
And yeah. I emailed reynolds and they said that it should be ok, perhaps it would be more sensible to sand it by hand?

  • Or you could use some paintstripper (albastine or something else..) It takes some effort but the result is super (if you don't rush things ;) )

  • Ok.
The paintstripper wouldn't react with the steel would it?
I'm afraid of getting all the paint off to find a frame covered in holes!

And also, would the 753 be able to cope with the heat of the oven after powdercoating? It's really really thin

  • Not likely, but I would recommend an accurate refinishing anyway. Thuss wetpaint in authentic Gazelle colour and the right decals. Of course it is a quite an investment, but with a 753r it is easy to justify. A powder coat will pretty much ruin merits and resale value however. Such you could consider with a beat up A, but not with a 753r imo. Moreover a wetpaint would be easier to get rid of the next time you would consider a refinishing.

  • Yeah, that's true.
    Thanks for the advice.
I'm not sure of anyone who could do the job in the midlands though, I guess I'll have to take a look. The seller also included decals so that won't be a problem.

EDIT: Lee Cooper does them but he charges £95 for a single colour, and that's more than I paid for the frame. Doesn't Mario Vaz do them for £50 or something?

  • Yes, maybe more than the frame, but you did not pay the ussual price for the frame. I would say investing 95 (or even more) in having it properly refinished is not a big deal with such frame. If budget is really an issue it is maybe worth considering to move it on to someone who could do it properly. I think that is what I would do.
