I'm just off to stab myself in the face for a bit...

I was trying to avoid having a fugly freehub body hanging off the wheel. I also have a nice WI whatsit so would like to keep using that. I think I will just run skinnier tubed tyres befitting the era it's from. Sod improvements.

Panaracer Fire XCs? They're red so should be fast, right?

Linkage, like a cargobike.

Great tyres in their day. That day being about 15 years ago :-)

So, they should match the bike then, which has skinnier rims than my feckin' TT bike.
Is it a stupid idea to fit skinny tyres? I think 1.9-2.1 is about it. 2.3s will probably fit but not sure they'll handle well bulging high.
Anything else suitable for winter xc at Thetford?

Yeah, you don't really want to go much above 2.2 with a narrow rim.
You don't need a huge amount of tread for Thetford, even in the Winter. If you're racing, then something fast rolling, but within reason. Maybe a Shwalbe Nobby Nic front/ Racing Ralph rear or Maxxis Ardent front/ Crossmark rear.
This place is good, if you need them quickly.

Try to avoid the cheaper compounds from Schwalbe and C**tinental, as they're a bit plasticy and will try to kill you.

I've done the vast majority of my riding with 2.0" (actually measure up as 1.9") Bontrager XR Mud tyres on skinny (22mm external) Mavic 317 rims, no suspension, and I'm not light. There's a bit of stability increase noticeable running 2.0" XR1s, which come up a bit bigger, on wider D521 rims (28.5mm external), but I probably wouldn't fit any larger tyres to the 317s unless I wanted to up the pressure a bit.
I can really recommend the XR Mud tyres for most Thetford riding, they dig in to the sloppy bits nicely, shed quickly and are actually pretty decent for anything except really dry hardpack and stuff. Don't slip too badly on roots either. Would like to try Ardents at some point

I think someone else warned me off Nobby Nics but now I can't find their comments.
"Despite what they look like, they are not that great in muddy conditions as they just clog."
One of the guys in my club suggested "Tubeless-Easy Snakeskin Schwalbe Rocket Rons Evos (2.25"). Fantastic allround mtb tyre."
I'll add yours to the list.

It was price and reports of them wearing out stupidly quickly that put me off buying Schwalbes, but lots of people rate Ralph/Nic/Ron combos

Scwalbe do two versions of their tyres. Evo and performance.
Always buy the evo.

Riding in the wrong sort of mud...
Thetford is mostly sand, so no chance of anything clogging there. I guess it depends on if you want tyres specific to a race, or just a decent, fast all-rounder.

Ah, ok, just assumed it would be muddy.
I need them for a single race so I guess as specific to Thetford race circuit as possible. I won't be doing any training for this so there's no point going for something general.
