I say get them and worry about that later. Winter can be long and hard on hands and feet. I have my heated gloves so I'm halfway there. :]

Good kit is worth spending money on in my opinion.

This is what im starting to think, last winter I just used overshoes, but they're far from perfect if you're spending long periods of time off the bike, this year it looks like im actually going to have a bit more cash, and I dont mind it all getting a bit spendy if its worth it.

The lakes are well respected by people who's opinions I respect, so I wouldn't think twice if I had the money.
Even slightly cold feet can ruin a nice ride.
Your motivation to go out in the cold is definitely higher when you know the elements aren't going to ruin things.
Good kit is an investment worth making. -

I found a really nice jacket too which I'd love, but again...funds evade me.

so is the consensus go for the MW80s then?
Been researching options and also found these

Shimanos & specialized probably most pleasing to the eye, but am more bothered about having warm & dry feet than looking swish on the dark lonely 18 miles to work.

regular shoes on double straps, with the inner part of the double strap/pedal wrapped in cling film = win

SPDandals and waterproof socks
you heard it here first! -

cling film on your pedal cages doesn't quite strike me as win.

Has anyone actually dropped on the Lake MXZ 302's?
Are they better than the green Mitsubishis?

I've searched "winter narrow" in posts and came up with bupkis. So, I have narrow feet and want winter road boots. Anyone have any suggestions?
-
• #364
I have pretty narrow feet and have found the MW81s a great fit, worth mentioning I bought a 47 instead of a 46 as well.
-
• #365
Hm...those are mtb, otherwise I'd say I've read those reviews and had been considering them. Am looking for road shoes/boots so I can have one wedged.
-
• #366
ah sorry missed that you were after a road boot, do they do a RW81? I know they do a RW80 which can be had cheaply here
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=31743
The MW80 & 81 both felt very similar, just where I shopped they didn't have the 47 in the MW80...

chain reaction also do a no questions return, as long as you haven't used them, just incase you find they don't fit great after lunging around the house. The straps are really good, allowing plenty of tightening.

Ah, thanks for the suggestion, I'll prob go for that when I'm ready. Good price!

MW80's were perfectly waterproof today, and pleasantly warm.
They also have quite a thick rubbery sole, so strolling over London Bridge with a coffee is more comfortable than when Sidi'd.

I have the Lake 302's on order, will report back if/when they finally arrive.

I bought some Answer Kashmir last year cheap from Chain reaction.....they are saying discontinued now, but if you could get a pair, they are superb.....and they look good too, which is a novelty for most of them IMHO, apart from the Sidi's.......which are a whole heap of earth pounds.
Might be worth ringing them to see if they have any left? -

MUS pmd me asking about my experience with the MW80s, thought I may as well copy my thoughts over here for anyone wondering.
ended up with the MW81 as they didn't have the MW80 in my size.
They are definitely very warm and waterproof. I found out this morning though, and what seems to be common criticism applied to all winter boots, is that when it's really wet water runs down your leg and down your ankle meaning your feet get wet anyway. I've read the solution to this is to get mini hiking gators, which I plan on doing. I don't see it as a failure of the product at all, just inevitable. I got the MW over the RW model as using them through winter I reckon a decent sole is worthwhile, don't fancy navigating slushy carparks and pavements in hard plastic soles!
They are very comfortable whilst being stiff enough. If i was rating them I'd give them 5/5.
The soles are just like any other mountain bike spd shoe, cleats are recessed and I find them comfortable to walk in. I would advise trying them on in person though, as I bought a size above my usual after trying 46 and 47 on (which is what the reviews I read suggested anyway.)

I keep meaning to buy these, and then buy some bike part instead. Fecking idiot that I am.

I'm wearing what I've worn last year - flat pedals and leather boots.
Ha! I can barely afford them myself!
