  • The MTB soes I commute in now are pretty small. I have over-shoes. But what I'd really like is room for thicker socks, and more insulating in-soles. Metal cleats and their bolts suck the heat from inside your shoes.

I'm with BRP. I like to think of myself as a tough, weather resilient, type. But cold toes or fingers make me a sad little furry.

  • Rab gaitors from Cotswold Outdoor or similar- pair those with MW80's and you have the key to dry feet heaven.

  • i'll be in my normal shoes but with a selection of over shoes. over shoe are great.....although they look crap

  • Economically winter boots were a better option than over boots for me, they ain't exactly durable.

  • PRO or GORE neoprene overshoes should last at least a few thousand miles. And you only need them when it's sub 10° ish.

Mine are PRO and cost £15 a couple of years ago.

  • Im still using the adidas neoprene toe warmers i bought in melb 10 years ago.

  • Overshoes are a great solution to mild winter riding. But I've gone through at least 2 a winter for some time. They're bulky too

As an overshoe expert. I'd say get a pair of budget ones with velcro fastening. They last as long as the pricey ones, and zips are a shite idea for overshoes.

I'll be running Planet x ones, untill I bite the bullet on some proper shoes.

  • If you do 2 per winter you're walking too much.

  • He has real winter, though.

  • If you do 2 per winter you're walking too much.

My old shoes had a 'touring' sole. I think this was an issue. I had a few zips go on me, and I fall off a lot. I trash all sorts during winter.

Might consider stabilisers for the fatbike.

  • He has real winter, though.

The length of our winters is the biggest difference.

Its currently 2C outside and mad frosty. Snow could hit whenever.

  • Measured in months as opposed to days.

  • I used MTB shoes with neoprene overshoes last year, I often found the overshoes weren't actually enough to keep my feet completely warm, also as SF said, they are bulky and irritating.

I also discovered the hard way that overshoes + snow off the bike = freezing wet feet. Also like SF by about halfway through the winter my overshoes were well on their way to be being destroyed. Im really after shoes that I can comfortably wear on and off the bike, and still keep my feet warm and dry. you can say 'walking too much' till your blue in the face, but I dont want to have to carry an extra pair of shoes everywhere I go.

Anyhoo, The 302's shipped on friday, so should arrive today, I'll report back later in the week. excited

  • My driveway is about 20m long with a >10% gradient. I cant get to the bottom of it without filling my overshoes with snow, or have the toe pushed up. I also need to push my cleats right in to prevent crank arm rub. I dont walk loads in them, but have to shoulder the bike over areas of deep snow alot.

Anyway. If you're going to be happier in proper winter boots, and can afford proper winter boots. Then its a far better purchase then expensive indoor training kit IMO.

  • Bollox. Boots arrived, they look hench as fuck, well made, but despite me using their sizing guide they appear to come up small. Think im gonna have to exchange for the next size up...poo.

  • Mrlemon - which website did you order the lakes from? My lazy quick google search doesn't come up with much (pretty much like the mw80's which i thought were discontinued)

  • All Terrain Cycles in the end, mainly because they were the cheapest (marginally) although be warned that Im not sure whether they actually keep them in stock or not, Im dearly hoping there won't be the same delay again in exchanging mine for a bigger size.

  • Bit of a rubbish photograph- now that I look at it you cannot really see, but the big toe in this picture has lost all sensation due to cold:

This was with ski socks and Shimano MW80's, so, maybe merino socks as well.

  • I am appalled by this display of weakness Neil....

  • Yeah, my circulation is shite.

  • Still cannot feel my toe- waiting for it to thaw before I go for a run
