From the man who started brakeless, adopted gears, then bought a mountain bike.
Most people do it the other way round.
You'll be spunking all over your new Suzuki 350 motor bike next.

Wow! I come back after 3 days and a whole new eposide of my favourite soap has been played out in my absence!
To clarify, yers, the Ordianry is a 'penny farthing', and the Skyride was fab, andthought the 'penny' and tallbike riders were the first to be hit by the downpour.
Incidentally, this is a closed-road event, at low speeds, and we were sent off first at the start. My second and third runs, before clocking on for my work shift on a try-out show, were on more conventional bikes, with the suual number of braking systems.
goog point about trikes, lucifer. Two brakes on one wheel is still legal. My Ex's touring trike has caliper and drum on the front. -

So, all the way home ive been pondering if i should post something on this or not and ive obviously decided to tap away my thoughts onto my computer. Firstly im intending this to be mostly useful to people who havent made up their minds on the subject and im not trying to convert or preach to anyone....
Out on my lunch today, I decided to walk to town rather than pop to the supermarket round the corner that never offers my taste buds any true satisfaction....I see my 'friend x' sitting on the pavement leaning up against a lamp post looking at me in a rather odd blank way, it didn't take me long to realise that 'friend x' is normally on his fixie about town and that a lady next to him is holding his bike whilst he rests on the floor...ah, his been hit....then i see the car and a plastic police man talking to the driver....after a check to see that he is feeling fine but quite shook up and that there are enough people seemingly dealing with the situation I pop off to get food and stroll back, just as i arrive the real police are now taking over the situation and I can tell that 'friend x' is still shocked from the incident..
okok im waffling sorry....
the main point is that after seeing the police dealing with the situation and not sticking my nose in too much, but advising to get the right details from the involved people, the police man gave me his conclusion on the outcome of events:
as no one was hurt other than bump and scrapes and that the cycle had caused damage to the car, he was happy to write down that it was a non event and that they were to go their own ways.
At this point 'friend x' piped up and said a few choice swear words about the situation and that he was not to blame....and to reply to this the police man just pointed at the bike and asked where the brakes are.....ok so that was long winded and im no writer....but i wanted to try and show the situation....
This kind of rant/point/debate will and has always been on this forum, but people still arnt aware that they are treading on some risky ground by riding brakeless, and you will always be seen as the cause in an incident regardless of how it happened! Now hopefully no one will be in any sort of incident, but why risk losing all your rights by not having one little brake and a lever....(or even two!)
oh and as a last note, i am a complete hypocrite as i myself ride a brakeless fixieskdder.....until i put a brake(:P) on tomorrow.
stay safe and bikes are fun! :)

i have no problems with brakelessness, but one guy goes to college i regularly see him, and he rides brakeless, but is unable to stop, ive seen him turn down a side road and turn around because he could not stop for people at a zebra crossing, and jumping off because a car stopped in front of him

True that. I myself got into a similar accident just a week ago. Luckily no police had to be involved as there where no real damage other than i hurt my shoulder.
The main reason there where no damage was because of my front brake, my chain clogged up and snapped, suddenly i was rolling into a red light, in all of my desperation and pain (hurt my balls on the top tube, when the chain snapped) i pulled the front brake, and saved my skin..
Then i crashed because i pulled to fast and flew over my handlebar and my bike hit a car :(
- but thats just me being stupid.

thanks Tiswas, the point of this was to got straight to the point, rather than for it to come up several pages of comments later.
With more and more people getting on brakeless bikes sooner and sooner, without the understanding that if they were in an incident they would have very little in the form of the law and rights on their side.
What if the worst happened and you couldn't use your legs after an accident that wasn't your fault but due to the court noting that you had an illegal bicycle on the road you are unable to receive any compensation from the drivers insurance...
Its a horrid and harsh point but people have to know what they are getting into. Dont they?

Helmets are a good / bad idea, because I have an anecdote that makes my opinion more valid than others..

but like you pointed out this is a place to put your own insights as its an internet forum.....if you don't want to read the post thats your decision....why detract from its point that might make someone think about their actions...
anyway i knew this would happen, hence the can of worms in the title

It's a point made a million times before. If we were all to start threads when we had our own special insight into a topic, we would be on Bikeradar or worse.
Helmets are a good / bad idea, because I have an anecdote that makes my opinion more valid than others. Maybe I should start a thread, and make some facile emotional claims.
Anecdote, I'll give you anecdote.
This helmet WILL (thats right, WILL) save you from everything, including your pathetic life.

ive never ran a brake on a fixed gear, i pretty much went from a brakeless bmx (with a free wheel obv) to a brakeless fixed wheel. no problems at all bacause i was used to the old foot in the back wheel trick before i had learned to effectivly skid stop.
i think its pretty funny when you see someone on there new fixie with no breaks or foot retention and how their expression changes when they get to a cross roads and realise they cant do that skiddy stop thing that those guys they saw on youtube can do.
