I'm just wondering, if people are happy with this guy's work.. is it still reasonable to keep the thread title?
-
• #128
Yeah. I'd say the same about the Colourtech one really, Fiddy swore that Dave Crowe did great work for him... yet no testimonials to that effect on the thread.

I can't comment on Vaz or Colourtech, but had Atlantic Boulevard do some work for me a couple of years ago and they did an excellent job. They offer a repair service according to their website;

Mario quoted me a single Colour, (inc. stripping, sand bls., prim, col, lac) 60/70 quid.
Since I'm doing my Carlton he told he stocks enough transfers to have the ones
I'm after. I'm getting it from other source tho´.
He also said the waiting time is at 1 week, for now. -

Well, to get a frame blasted is £15. He does a range of paints, which if prices at between £45 - 70 i think, but the paint price usually includes free blasting. Decals are cheap if he has them, and his bro has access to a vinyl cutter, so if can have plain single colours made. He does cheap, decent braze-ons and removals, as well as cheap re-tracking and re-spacing (though there aren't so good in my experience).

Mario seems to do "stove-enamel, two-pack (for carbon frames) or powder".
My understanding of chip resistant is that enamel < two-pack < powder.
As far as I have read in this site people who complained about chipping seem to have painted with enamel.Has anyone painted with two-pack or powder by Mario?
Or painted with enamel and two-pack clear as final protective finish (may not be compatible I can't remember)?
On his site it says "two-pack (for carbon frames)" but, in general, has been used on car body repair(not in production line) for long time so I believe it is possible. -

A mate of mine had a good car sprayer use two pack on a new frame he built on a Dave Yates course and it just isnt hard enough for cycle use as it chips easily.

Does any one has other bad experience with him to share?
Don't go to Vaz for repair, he ruined my Carlton 531c when removing the braze ons (cracked down tube a few months later). Charged me for repair when I gave him benefit of the doubt, then down tube cracked at the head tube lug where he put the new tube in a month later. I went to see him about it and he just told me to f*ck off! I've ended up paying for 2 finishes and a repair and all I've got is a broken frame.

You posted exactly that on another thread. You an anti Vaz campaigner? Because if you keep posting it in every repaint thread people will begin to suspect you work for another coater.
-
• #138
But Mario doesn't do the repairs himself does he? Isn't this thread about his respraying ability rather than the fucking up of your bike?
Have you just joined the forum to post that message up and over again? Why can't you go back to Mario and / or small claims court?

No, just looking around on the threads and it seemed appropriate to post.

Mario's repairs are done by his brother, and the last time I checked his brother works at ...Roberts.
Could it be your 531c frame that was doomed from start? -

I paid my money to Mario, so he is responsible. The initial post asked if anyone had any other comments on bad experiences with Vaz, which is why I posted this again.

No problems at all until the braze ons were removed (tube then cracked), and then down tube replaced (new tube then cracked at lug).
Didn't mean to offend anyone.

I don't know why people are being so uppity about this... It's not like it's the first time people have slagged off Vaz's work/service. There's a reason this thread is called "Mario Vaz re-sprays = rubbish".
Unlucky Mr. Baracas.

If most people thought you were ok, but one or two people thought you were a cunt and posted a thread to that effect.. how would you feel.
As for my input.. I was commenting more on the duplicate posting this guy had made. I have no experience with Vaz one way or the other.

Well unfortunately that's how businesses, especially those that rely on word of mouth such as Vaz's, work. If you tell unhappy customers to fuck off then it will inevitably catch up with you.
Unlucky Mr. Vaz.

FWIW I've never used or met Mario either and this is just my opinion anyway.

Perhaps people who want things done on the cheap shouldn't be allowed to moan about the quality of work? :-)

His work and that of his brother has always been v. good and fair price. He charged me £4 to take out a stuck seat pin. Try getting anything done at Argos for £4.

Nor have I, but I've heard stories about any other builder. My Carlton is supposed to have been 'restored' by Universal Cycle Centre (ex-Carlton staff), and still the job is mediocre.

I find it a little disturbing that people (not you specifically) are so happy to take one persons word over the reputation of Vaz...
who knows what was actually said? and why? some times frames just fucking go wrong, you are talking about high tensile steel tubes that has had 25 years of battering, eventually, they fail just like everything else.
He has been painting bikes for 21 years, and boom all of a sudden every tom, dick, tarqiun and cressida, is an expert on bikes, and finishing, and brazing....NOT ...if he was 'rubbish' then he would have closed down an aeon ago...He has been around, he's not a fool and hates to be treated like one. I'm sure that some people go into his workshop and think...pokey, dirty, hhmmm...he's foreign, it's not an oasis of celeste green wipe down surfaces...
and not...He's been doing this for ever, his brother is really good, I'm sure I can trust him, I had better not act like some jumped up little wanker....oh...I did.
People are constantly comparing powder coating to paint, and thats just because they are ill educated.
They don't know their cellulose from their two pack from their acrylic...
Powdercoating has always a been the coating that did what paint didn't...ie not chip.
It is limited in how you apply it and the finishes achieved, and if the experts that knew anything about anything, did actually *know something...*they would give Vaz some of the credit he deserves.
He does a bloody good job for the money. End of.
I would much rather take a bike to his workshop for the experience, and see all the precious tin hanging from the ceiling ...which isn't some homogenised and soul-less place, which eventually it may become as he was driven out of business by some stupid bloody thread that was easy to google.
I think we should start a thread that also merits him, as having to trawl through 3 pages of rubbish, isn't really fair to the man.
to stay in business for 21 years in such a niche industry as frame painting, isn't acheieved with luck...
I have 3 frames coming back soon, I shall post them.
