It's a geared bike so I thort I get abuse for pics, I also have a fixie for fitness and a commuting bike, old Genesis day 02, that may go to him for powder coating.
Tips for dealing with MR Vaz.
Be nice, he is very nice, he supports Spurs and I still like him.
Write down what you want on a bit of paper and give it to him
Go in person to deliver and collect
Pay cash and haggle discount.
His brother can do anything, he burnt out my BB and tracked my tri'.
Dismantling costs £5 per part, ie forks, BB. so do yourself if you can.
Get touch up pot to take away with you.

If you want perfection, go to Argos or some other frame painter and pay three times the price. If you want a good job at a bargain price go to Vaz.
Mario is a good guy and does good work - but you must give him full written instructions.
I've had four frames painted by Mario and had repairs done by his brother to a very high standard. Yes, the paint is fairly soft compared with powder coating but it's not that bad. If he does make a mistake, he'll put it right without argument. As for lug lining, he can do that while you wait and it takes only a few minutes.
As a comparison, I had one frame refinished by Vaz and another by Argos, in the same colours of flam red with white panels. There was virtually no difference between them other than the lug lining was slightly better on the Argos frame, but they also applied one of the transfers incorrectly. Mario charged just over £100 and this included various new braze-ons and a new brake bridge. Argos charged £380, but this did include chromed ends.
Here's one frame he did for me. The picture speaks for itself I feel.

so did I, a vintage carlton, did you see the pinky Roberts he had there repaired? Bendy tube thing, real nice.

I did indeed... What colour was yours? Saw a Carlton by the door...

The Carlton was the piece of sxxt white one, dropped it off for a mate who is a builder, it had chrome forks, probably 1975 vintage, 531 though and very Noel Edmonds typeface on the tube!
How do I upload an image here?

These all look good, and the Hetchins is a beauty. (Incidentally, where'd you get the red toe straps?)
Thanks too for the advice. I've been shilly-shallying about taking my Pennine in to be resprayed but now I've scraped together the cash I'll take it down there in the next couple of weeks. Can't wait.

No, he's around. He's just got back from a holiday. He gets the frames bead blasted off-site and that's where he was going when I spoke to him earlier in the week. He has a mobile but if the site's down I couldn't tell you what it is...
I third what CamdenStranger and Wheelnut say about him: really nice chap. His workshop is a proper grotto: a rickety room above a garage tagged onto a suburban semi, choc full of tools and frames. The whole experience is a lot nicer than going to an industrial unit in the middle of nowhere. Fingers crossed the job's equally as nice!

- There you go. He's a nice bloke, and his prices cant be grumbled over. I've had a few frames painted by him. Generally a pretty good job, though the do chip easier than a factory job would. Having said that it depends what type of paint you go for, and with mario, that largely depends on the colours. I.e a flat white might be more chip resistant than a metallic blue, ask him and he'll tell you straight.

OK I want to try to tidy up my Geoff Butler.
I need the old decals removed and replaced (not under the laquer and 'flakier than a leper's finger' ( (c) pj(pj) aka The Lake Of Darkness). I have / can get all the decals I need. I want two dents rolled out (Ross reckoned these dents could be fixed OK). I need to touch up any chips. I want to preserve the current paint as its really hard wearing and not shit like modern enamel.
Does anyone know if keeoing the old paint is possible (yet removing existing decals), and whether Mario, Dave Crowe, or any other 'restorer' is best for this work, bearing in mind the repairs needed and the desire to keep the the exisiting paint if possible?
cheers
