not sure which to go for. but im sure il get it sorted. -

Get brass nipples not fancy red alloy ones. Far more reliable, especially if you are going to ride these in the wet.

H Plus Archetypes are a similar price to open pros and probably what I would go for.

I used to think this, but apparently Sapim anodised 7075 alloy nipples actually outperformed their brass nipples in their in-house salt-spray corrosion test. I'd still be wary of generic alloy nipples, but it seems that you can safely have colourful nipples if you pay for premium product.

want to try and keep the build to around the £100 mark or lower if i can
so if the red nipples take me over that then they are out. been and bought a proper 4 sided spoke key now so thats on the waywhat is the deciding factor when choosing rims ?? im a heavy rider so want a strong wheel but not one that is unnecessarily heavy
il go look at the archtypes though have a read up on them

what is the deciding factor when choosing rims ?
Tyres.
Pick your tyres first, then choose the optimal rim to fit them. After that, it's pretty much a straight trade off between strength and weight for aluminium rims, there's little scope for using shaping to improve strength so throwing more metal at the problem is all that's left.

Not that you have that many options if you're going to build a complete pair of wheels on Novatec hubs for under £100
-
• #734
well my current tyres are continental Grand Prix.
but would like to put some gp4 seasons or 4000 on in the future
23mm onesgoing to pick the on one novatec hubs as they are a great price with a know rep
if anyone can help me in the right choice of rims i would really appreciate it..
then the last piece is spokes i guess
-
• #735
I built up the on-one hubs to some open sports with ACI spokes, they've been good.
-
• #736
what did they come in at Snotty otter?? guessing £80 ish
what do they weigh finished..??
cant wait to get building.. can you remember the spoke lengh you went with?
-
• #738
2 questions then.
is it worth spending the extra and getting the open sport or will the a110 be good enough
and why do you say 25c?? my rider weight.....
-
• #739
Not off the top of my head, I've probably got some spokes left so can find out. Can't remember cost either but it wouldn't have been loads.
-
• #740
Fat tyres are in, all comfy and shit.
-
• #741
the price seems to be only £5 extra here and there and i can cope with that
just want to get the right parts to build up
-
• #742
iv done nearly 2000 miles since june last year on 23c and been fine
but i must add the last 2 months on the old fixie running 27" with fat tyres is very pleasant.. but the pre cursa frame wont take 25c i dont think
-

Construction of the two rims is the same, Mavic just price the skinny road rim higher than the wider touring rim because the market will take it.
Have a good look at your frame and see if grown-up tyres will fit. The advantages of 25C tyres are well worth having, especially for the more ample gentleman.
-
• #744
Make sure you go for an odd number of spokes, preferably a prime number, otherwise the rims will fail due to bad maths.
-
• #745
iv always been shit at mafffffssss..
this is doomed to fail if i put them on a carbon frame then !!!!!
-
• #746
You have to fit a plastic pi plate in order to ensure the correct radius, and run a low enough air to work with the slightly hotter tyres.
-
• #747
hollands pi plate??
-
• #749
so il need to go with the more narrow rims then...im guessing
more homework needed

25C tyres on A119 > 23C tyres on A119 > 25C tyres on Open Sport > 23C tyres on Open Sport
Mine are great.
