Yeah.

thanks much for this-wheel is now 95% there after moving all the non-drive side spokes along one... silly sod that i am.

• #705
I can't quite relate your reply to the advice i gave, but glad i seem to have helped.
ooh! you're saying you had the opposite problem to Hugo7; you had trailing spokes on one side and leading spokes on the other seemingly too short, and you fixed it by moving all nds spokes along one (hub?) hole? I hadn't considered that possibility.

do these come with standard issue 12mm nipples or weird DT long ones? calculating spoke lengths i need for a couple of wheels now..

is the a source somewhere for what spoke tension i should be using
-

You need to build a mathematical model of the wheel under examination and the service loads it will experience, and then solve for the case where no individual spoke tension drops to zero under any foreseeable service condition, and no individual spoke tension rises above the yield point under any foreseeable service condition. Usually this will give a range of possible spoke tensions, which narrows towards the Dymaxion design and then becomes negative if your wheel design is not usable under the prescribed conditions.

Is there an app for that?

It should feel pretty tight.

My rule of thumb is to find out what the maximum spoke tension is for the rim, and aim for that less about 10%. It's not exactly scientific, but it's worked so for. The only exception was on some Chinese carbon clincher rims, where they reassured me the maximum spoke tension was 180kgf. I built them to 120-125kgf, and they've been a happy set of wheels so far.

About to order spokes and just wanted to double check:
Getting: 295.4mm front and 294.1mm rear for my spoke calculations.
Am I better off rounding them both down to 294mm? -

Anyone know if Novatec have changed the design of the F172 rear hub recently?
sdeals website says 57mm ftf, but Novatec website says 50mm ftf.
Anyone know why?

I wouldn't rely on either site to have been rigorously checked for accuracy. If you're buying the hub and want to get spokes at the same time, check to see whether that extra 7mm actually makes any difference to the spoke length you need, after rounding down to available spoke lengths

I've seen BDop website also quoting different measurements to the Novatec website for same hubs.
Sdeals seems to extended their product range, not seen Kinlin branded rims sold in the UK before.

mmhh rounding down gives a 1mm increase in spoke length. I imagine thats nothing to worry about provided all my the other calcs are correct?

hi all got an itch i need to scratch
spent a lot of time truing wheels and sorting broken spokes for mates and stuff and want to have a go at building a set of wheels for my new build.
i want to end up with a set of track wheels with a flip flop hub
not spend the earth on a first build
end up with wheels to be proud off and not be too heavy
any recommendations on which parts to buy and i dont know where to start.
will be ridden on roads so need sealed bearings and a front brake surfacecheers

I think this should be in the wheelbuilding thread, but anyway here's a cheap decent build (in my opinion):
32h hubs - http://www.on-one.co.uk/c/q/wheels_hubs_and_rims/hubs
Spokes - http://www.cyclebasket.com/m9b0s453p0/Components/Spokes-_Stainless_Steel_BLACK_Double_Butted
Rims - I was going to say that CRC were selling Jalco DRX6000 rims for about a fiver each, but it looks like they have sold out. This is probably the wheel component you have the most opinion on though and any 32h 700c rim should be fine. Deep section rims are easier to build generally.

check out arup's website linked from his profile page
his tip and hints and logical step by step approach / tutorials are very useful plus his rims / hubs and spokes database is very useful -

Cheers gents
I was looking at the Planet X miche hubs But these on one stuff is really cheap are they good quality ??
Il go look at the links and advice pages mentioned and get a better idea
Already got a truing stand to help tension and finish the wheels -

I have 2 pairs of the on-one hubs, they're great at that price.
One pair built up to Open Pros, t'other pair on Ambrosio Excursions. Both feel nice to ride.
Good luck.

arups videos are really help with the confidence great tutorial there
gonna go for on one black hubs and black spokes to open pro's i think..
may even put red nipples on.. oohh errr

The On-One hubs are re-branded Novatecs, nothing wrong with them. Cheapest I've seen them is £15 each.
Yep.
