Noticing that there's the new DT Swiss R470DB rim it's got me wondering about a wheelset I have hanging around not doing anything - a set of HED Ardennes Plus LT.
I was thinking this morning while commuting in that as I've no use for them yet and don't see that situation changing (they're 12x100/12x142 and I've no suitable frame) then maybe it makes sense to flip them. Then in the future when I actually do need something I could pick up the R470 rims easily enough and a decent set of hubs, e.g. some DT swiss 350 or Hope RS4 hubs.
My question really is, are the HEDs really gonna be that astoundingly good that it's just worth keeping them around in case?
I guess it's too early for R470 reviews but the R460s seemed alright. DT wheelbuilder puts the weight around 60g heavier but with pretty standard Competition spokes which isnt enough difference to sway things either way for me. So it's down to other unfathomables like stiffness, feel as well as more easily accesible things such as ease and cost of replacement rims, hub parts etc.

Why don't you just buy the adapters?

Because at the mo' it doesnt really solve anything doing that, my 9x100/9x135 standard bike already has wheels and until I stop falling off it, it doesnt need anything better than what it has :o
So it'd still be the case of a set of wheels sat about. If I order today though the cheapest I could get the adapters for would be 70eur from the US.
I'm just kind of mulling if that's money well spent or not. I'm a bit of a hoarder, recoup the money now and spend later on something - possibly just as good - or keep on hoarding if they're really that amazing, is what I'm wondering.

What you obviously need is a new bike

See this is what I keep telling myself too, but I keep buying parts I don't need so I've no money for a new bike :(
I bought a 'cheap' Super Record group last week. Where's the guilty-face emoji ? now I've a nice group, nice wheels. No frame.

You need a new frame.

Are the wheels shimano freehub though? You need 2 new frames

Not if it's 11 speed. But yeah, you need 2 new frames.

Yeah but who wants a Shimano cassette on their super record group set? Gross

Could have a SRAM cassette on a Super Record groupset. But yes, it would be a bit odd. But OK as an interim measure until the next frame comes along.

Didnt you buy campag?

Guys I was just going along with the chat, you know me.
I'm a sram only guy -

Yes, I owned it for a week.
It was beautiful, but utterly pointless.
Twice the cost of Ultegra and not as functionally effective.
I’m Di2 or die now

“Going along with the chat” has the same connotation as “asking for a friend”

I wish I could use that excuse

I feel we're going a bit DBAD here. A new frame for the HED.. with Sora? plus a new frame for the SR groupset with.. Shimano RS010 wheels?
Think this is all off topic anyway! Spent an hours looking about at De Rosa Corum, Casati Laser... hrmmm.

Cinelli Laser...

I think I know the answer but if I've calculated that I need 286mm left and 287 mm right spokes and have just found a box of 288mm spokes in a drawer... will the wheel explode? Double walled so room for a bit of spoke protrusion.

Doubt itll work. Nipples will bottom out leaving you with not enough tension. Just buy a box of 286mm
Mine was out by a couple of mm when brand new. Annoying that the tool to measure this is quite expensive. (I borrowed one instead)
