Thanks mate - there is a UK distributor for WI, though not sure if they would keep these in stock.
I forgot about Novatec - I generally try to stay away after experiencing seized bearings on the 771/772 disc hubs and a front A141 for that matter...
I'm checking with the customer to see what they'd like to do.

Smear of marine grease on the outside of each bearing (the black/blue plastic bit) is a good step and would be considered by the bearing manufacturer to be part of the seal design. Seldom happens on bike parts, since we expect everything to be super-clean and dust-free...

Yeah, that's been my advice for customers insisting on Novatec. Great hubs considering the price/weight other that the fact that moisture gets in.

Nice tip, thanks Andy.

What's the chop with the 511 "funny nipples"? I'd like to use standard spokes for the build in case I need to track spare parts down in Randomville. It says you can use a regular spoke tool with their DT Swiss Squorx Pro Head Nipple (http://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/anybody-building-wheels-dt-swiss-xm401-xr331-rims-896895.html). But can you replace one of those DT nipples with a standard nipple for repairs?
I guess no one is making deeper rims because it makes more sense to use cabron for that shiz.
Do all the other rims you mention use standard spokes/nipples?

Max system weight of the R460 DB is 110kg whereas the 511 is 130kg which gives me a large steak and apple pie buffer zone.
Those Kinlin are deep but not as wide and 100g heavier than the 460s.
No weight limit on SL25 although they're quite light so I guess similar to 460s?

You can use standard spokes, but the nipples and washers are part of the rim design. Probably best to carry some spares, as the underside of the head is their non-standard hemispherical ProHead® design to match the profile of the PHR washers. The Torx drive is just the next step up from my usual preference for building from outside the rim with hex head nipples, there's a conventional square interface for fixing the wheels from the inside with a conventional spoke key.

So normal spoke heads will fit? They won't be too small or something? It's just for emergency repair.
I hate non-standard shit like spokes though - should I consider the Velocity rims instead? They don't require any weird crap do they?
Same goes for SL25s, but they're not as deep/aero/strong/sexy... -

So normal spoke heads will fit?
Normal spokes fit, normal nipples won't engage properly in the washers. They're about ¼oz. for 10 nipples and washers, so take spares if you're worried.

You'd use these rims over any of the other options? Rose seem to have them cheap... they just don't have them.

Which Kinlin? The XR31T is a bit wider than either the DT R460 or RR511, and splits the difference on weight.

I'd take @thecycleclinic 's advice and use the XR31T with offset rear if I were prioritising durability above all else. If I were building some ~30mm deep metal wheels for myself, I'd use the DT RR511 because I think they are prettier :-)
-
• #4640
That's basically where I'm at. I want the 511s because if these never wear out I want them sexy :)
I could mismatch and go offset rear and deeper front. The Velocity aren't offset though. Any ALU rim/carbon fairing options like old HED jet or SRAM S80? Probably not with no brake track.

Are you from http://thecycleclinic.co.uk/collections/rims ?
-
• #4642
Use a offset rim for the front wheel as well (front disc hubs are offset)
-
• #4643
Nah - offset front messes with the aero
-
• #4644
Makes sense. Kinda.
Stupid disc brakes.
-
• #4645
So does covering the bike in luggage :)
Aero wheels aren't that much of a concern. They're a 'nice to have'. Durability and stiffness when loaded up is probably more of a concern for me.
-
• #4646
yes there is also something about it that looks wrong :), but he asked for a practical build.

https://www.condorcycles.com/collections/sale/products/condor-uno-deep-v-rim?variant=18070520199
Condor has black & white 32h 'deep' Condor Uno rims for £9.99 in their sale.
Potentially good for building a beater wheelset - add £20 of plain gauge spokes and £20 of Planet X track hub - Voila sub £50 wheelset...

Hi, Can you help me please?
I have a swiss side gotthard wheelset factory laced in a 2-1 pattern. Can I lace a Powertap GS 24h hub to this? It will be a different pattern obvs but its the same amount of holes. Am I missing something? I dont think the rim is assymetric or anything.
Will it work? Cheers!

Time for new rims? Noticed the below on partner's bike. We're larger, few bits broke off but these seem pretty stuck... Rim is a little concave on this side
