  • oh dear did you try 'a' and it not go well?

  • not yet, just a bump for the thread to see if anyone had an opinion

  • I suppose it would depend on how far out the rim has gone and in which direction. Ideally it should be not too far out to the non-drive side and a straight replace is the nice easy way forward.

  • I would loosen the nipples of (if they are seized then cut the spoke) and replace one at time. Then tension and true up. The tension on other spokes will change it may not be a simple case of simply tensioning the spoke up. You may have some evening of tensions to do regardless of well the wheel was built the first time around.

  • Does anyone have any experience with DCR's own brand hubs and rims? He sells the shit out of them, showing them built onto R45s etc on Facebook but I have no idea if they're actually any good (for riding or building).

  • Post some pics, I'm sure someone can ID them.

I had a pair of wheels from him and was very impressed both with him and the wheels.

  • Any use? He says they're Taiwanese, so is most likely a rebrand. Not sure if anyone can id. They're £60 a pop, so more than Archetypes, but if they're ceramic then they might stay pretty a little longer...

  • The hubs are by Bitex. The front's a RAF12, and the rear's a RAR16.

  • Toying with the idea of building some wheels for my new Pompino and was hoping someone with more knowledge of wheel building than me (probably everyone in this thread) could tell me whether the following parts would make for an acceptable, ultra-budget wheel set:

Hubs – Formula MATT Black Track Pista Fixed/Free Hub Set - 32 Hole – £30
    Rims – Mavic A119 – £32
Spokes – ACI Alpina black DB – £28

An online spoke calculator told me I'd need 293.6mm and 293.4mm spokes so I'm guessing 294mm would be suitable?

  • I've a new wheel-build in mind for racer/fast commuter.

The rims are both NOS: Mavic Open Pro and Ambrosio Excellence; the Ambrosio rim is slightly thicker than the Mavic. Wondering if there are any thoughts about what rim do I put where - i.e., front or rear? Am erring on the side of Ambrosio at the front...

  • Cross-post from my project.

Convince me to spend (or not) £80-90 more on a pair of Pacenti SL23s and associated Stan's guff over 15eur Schürmann Yak 19 rims. Is tubeless ease and 70g/wheel worth it? Would ghetto tubeless work with a 1.5" tyre? Can black rims with shiny silver braking surfaces actually look good?

Also, any reason not to use XTR M950 hubs?

All sound stuff, although spending almost double on spokes to have black instead of silver doesn't meet my expectation of "ultra-budget"

  • Convince me to spend...over 15eur Schürmann Yak 19 rims.

This should convince you not to spend anything on those particular rims

  • The manufacturer's spiel seems to suggest that's par for the course with the way they punch the holes, and I was inclined to believe they weren't interested in killing anyone with dodgy rims. But if you reckon that's genuinely dangerous..

  • Little cracks that could become big cracks wouldn't fill me with confidence.

  • What's my best option for road disc rims for 32h or 36h for Transamerica? Durability of primary concern, aero and bling comes later. Want wide, like Archetype rims.

    Thanks

  • I like the Halo aerowarrior rim. It is listed as 550 grams but the 3 Ive had all were about 500 grams.

  • Isn't that just expensive version of Archetype?

  • I thought you liked spending money? I'd buy them because they're not Archetypes.

  • isn't that just expensive version of Archetype?

If you want to save money, get DT R460DB

  • No, I like having good stuff but I'm always bang for buck, not just buck. Buyers over there >>>

'Not archetype' is not reason enough. Go sit in the corner and think about what you've done.

  • I don't want the cheapest, I want the best for the least money :)

  • I want the best for the least money

R460 is the best value. There are cheaper 22/23mm wide rims, and there are better ones.
