  • The spokes on the rear cross over just after leaving the hub, but they bend around each other at an alarming angle. Is this correct for 2x lacing?

That's interlacing. See my earlier comments - it's traditional, but not strictly necessary.

  • Both sets of wheels with CX rays that Arup built for me look like that.

  • Thanks for the reassurance. Is a CX-Ray twisted 100 degrees grounds for spoke replacement, or do they just need untwisted and re-trued?

  • Just put them in a frame, both are out of round and lateral true. They're going back. Seems you do get what you pay for.

  • Looking at building up a set of light(ish) road disc wheels, was tempted by Pacenti SL25/ Hed Belgiums/ Grails but the DT swiss r 460 db seem to be the same weight and half the price. Is there any real difference I'm missing or any reason I shoulnd't go with the as cheap option?

And on the hub front - what's the go to light weight (not extortionate) disc hub?

  • Is there any real difference I'm missing or any reason I shoulnd't go with the as cheap option?

    Nope.

what's the go to light weight (not extortionate) disc hub?

    Novatec?

Also why not the OTP Spline DB 23 wheelset?

  • Can't seem to find them anywhere at a reasonable price - about 400 euros most places.

Whereas I reckon I could get the Novatecs + r 640b rims built for about £180 which seems like a good deal..

  • Any experience ordering hubs from Aliexpress? - am I going to get stung by import duty....

  • Luckily I found out about outrageous shipping before ordering, Aliexpress seemed to offer low shipping until I committed and then costs ballooned. This happened a few times, but not not every time.
    Depends on seller I guess.

  • Just get from bdop. I've never got stung with duties from them.

  • Is a CX-Ray twisted 100 degrees grounds for spoke replacement

It's grounds for complaint, there's no excuse to have wind-up in bladed spokes*, but a CX-Ray can be wound up further than that without suffering damage.

*There's no excuse for it with round spokes either, but it's very easy to avoid with CX/CX-Ray as Sapim actually make a spoke holding tool for them.

  • I have 4 wounded up ACI spokes (sorry...) by about 90 deg in a front wheel, it hasn't exploded yet.

It's bad form however, I'd expect a professional outfit to do better.

  • Ryde Pulse Comp 28h going at £42 a pop: http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/RIRYCOD/ryde-pulse-comp-700c-rim

    Code: PXPPP40

  • Check also cnc-bike.de for novatec. Their shipping costs are pretty high, though.

  • And vision disc hubs going for £50 a set front & back - they look like rebranded version of the novatecs

  • usually ride 32h (eg mavic open pro with formula hubs)

if I wanted to build some fixed/track wheels with 50mm carbon clincher rims, what spoke count should I aim for?

  • 24f/28r?

  • 24f/28r?

20/24 is enough unless he's well over 100kg

  • So order some spokes and need some advice..
    I need spokes that are: 281.6mm, 284.2mm & 283mm

I was going to order a big pack Would I be ok to use just 281mm or 283mm or 285mm for all of them?

    Thanks!

  • was going to order a big pack Would I be ok to use just 281mm or 283mm or 285mm for all of them?

No. If you could do that, spoke manufacturers wouldn't bother to make spokes in 1mm or 2mm length increments.

  • Thanks - that makes sense :)

Am one of my spoke lengths is 284.2mm am I better off going with 283mm or 285mm spokes (they're all that are available..)

  • 283mm

  • I managed to knacker 4 adjacent DS spokes on a 24H wheel by not properly checking the limit screw and overshifted the chain into the wheel. CX Rays. Nice.

What's the best way to replace; try to swap them out or loosen everything and start from scratch?
