  • Which Omega rims?

They did clincher and tubulars, in box section or v.

I had a set of clincher v and they were pretty decent, classy looks too.

    You're thinking of Campag Omega?

There are Omega branded rims/wheelsets which have nothing to do with campagnolo.

  • Hi All,

I'm after a Rim Recommendation for a new build, I've just ordered a Rear 32H Large flange track hub and I'll need a Rim to pair with it, I'm running Fixed on a daily (30 mile round trip) commuter bike, so I need a sensibly priced 622 clincher rim,
I don't currently use a rear brake but might want the option to fit one through winter, I typically use 25 - 28C tyres @90-100psi, I'm currently ~85kg and tend not to ride with bags/panniers or extra loads.

I've got a couple of potential rims I'm already considering:

First is a Mach 1 "Omega", I've got an off the peg rear wheel on my Geared road bike with one of these and its been a pretty reliable wheel.

My second one is an Ambrosio Excursion, slightly cheaper, with eyelets but I've never used an Ambrosio rim before so don't know what they are like.

Any input/experiences/better recommendations looking for a robust rim under £30 ideally...

  • Spa cycles have a variety of sturdy rims for £18 each. Free postage on orders over £50. Not sure how much postage is on rims below that threshold...

  • if you're willing to send £5 more, kinlin adhn's from hubjub are good rims, wider too so will mean more comfortable and less rolling resistance with 25c/28c

  • Cheers for the info,

Had a quick look at the Rims on Spa cycles and they have some contenders:
the Rigida "Chrina" looks like a nice balance of weight and strength described as being for "Road, audax, light touring" the "Sputnik" might be overkill @690g, seems weighty, should be robust though, and the EXAL LX17 could be OK, its a middle weight sort of rim, I'm also tempted to try the EXAL DC19, its a "Disc only" touring/MTB rim and that would mean no rear brake option... Hmmm, things to weigh up

Anyone got any experience of Exal rims? any good?

Had a look at the kinlin adhn too, they look nice, but I'm sticking to budget...

  • It's all covered up thread. Rigida Grizzly is an option.

  • I've built a set of SS wheels using LX17 rims, wasn't difficult to get them true and evenly tensioned.

Just ordered another pair for a geared bike, will see how that goes in a few weeks.

Did you have any issues mounting the tyres? I find it a real battle to get the tyres on mine.

  • Bit snug, using Schwalbe Smart Sams on the SS.

  • Hi all,

Building up a new set of wheels for my recently crashed ride and am looking for some spoke recommendations. Cost and durability are more important than weight or aero-ness for me.

Wheels will be H+Son Archetypes, 32h, laced to Campag Record Pista High Flange hubs.

I know nothing about spokes. Help me out!

    Cheers!

  • Cheapest double butted you can get or CX Rays.

    Next?

  • Cool, CX Rays.. I'll have a look for them. What about nipples? Doesn't really matter?

  • Wheel building thread >>>>>>>>>>>>

  • I tried a Planet X tyre (Uncle John) made by Vee Rubber and a Vittoria cyclocross tyre, the name of which escapes me. The latter needed a crobar to mount and the former two crowbars. I've always found Vittoria tyres easy to mount by hand to.

  • Ah shit, sorry, don't know how I missed this general thread. Thanks for moving my question.

Do DT Alpine III spokes fit Record Pista spoke holes? If so, you have your answer.

  • Cost? ACI DB, 21p each from cyclebasket, inc 12mm brass nipples. Plus a few quid postage.

  • I'd use lasers on the front aci db on the back.

  • Thanks for the suggestions folks. I was leaning towards lasers for both front and back actually. Would this be a sound choice? I'm 200lbs (14.3 stone), and they'll be laced to 36h Archetypes. I think this should be strong enough yeah?

Good question. I have been trying to find some definitive specs for these hubs so that I can order the spokes. I'm not sure which specs to believe. Has anyone built up a pair of the high flange pista hubs like this? http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=8E783D87-733E-4606-B293-1D3D1AE0D62E&Enum=110&AbsPos=72

I am looking at Sheldon's excel sheet of hubs/rims/calculator and the Campagnolo Pista hubs he's listed are not symmetrical - that is the distance from the left flange to center is different from that of the right flange to center. I thought these things were symmetrical?

Scratch that. I wouldn't use lasers. You'd probably get away with them on the front but it's a track wheelset? ...so stiffness is desirable.

  • My spoke knowledge is weak... Lasers are not stiff? Would Race be a better choice? CX-Ray seem nice but they are too expensive for my tastes.

  • Lasers are thinner/lighter and not what a clydesdale wants in a rear wheel. Yes Sapim Race would be a better choice.

  • Cheers thanks for the info miro.
