+1 to Tiagra and the Diatech Dirty Harry levels, they're both cheap as chip.

last questions about fuji sizes - sorry.
can't find a 54 anywhere in london to try out, so will have to mail order. did ride a 56 a couple of weeks ago, felt ok, im not used to road frames so it felt big, and ive noticed with all the bikes Ive tried out, each brand sizes them up differently.
I'm 5'11" used to riding bmx/mtb. the sizing guides seem to put me at 55/56, but some brands 56 bikes are huge.
if you ride a fuji how tall are you and what size do you ride.
thanks

I'm 5'11" and ride a 52 - tbh I should really be on a 54 but the 52 just felt right

I'm 6ft and ride a 58 Fuji which feels just about right (I normally ride a 57cm road) standover is around 32 inches. I do have long inseam though. Sounds like you need to try a 56 for size.

im 6ft2 and ride a fuji 58.
i would say you would want a 54/56. all depends on how long your arms are, how short your legs are

im just shy of 6ft3 and i ride a 58. i have also ridden the 61, but it felt like a horse.

6'2", Fuji 58 felt a tad to small for me

I am same height as you, and liked the 54 when i test rode it, mainly because like you i am more used to a frame with a sloping top tube, and like a bit more clearance, and also because i would more options getting it to fit by fing around with stem, post etc. Ended up getting a langster instead - this was back in 05 though
You should check this bike out if you want a 56 . .

I'm 5'11.5 and ride a 56cm fuji track. It definitely doesn't feel too big to me!

first proper decent length fixed ride today on a fuji track. apart from learning i need to clip my feet in, and remember not to try and freewheel - it was pretty good.
struggling to keep the chain right tight, i know they'll stretch a bit, but if i was going to pop tensioners on, which are the best? i use the profile ones on my bmx cruiser but they look a bit over kill for the track bike.

you shouldn´t keep the chain quite tight, you need it to spin freely without binding, just get those cheap DMR chain tug one that local bike shop tend to stock (as far as I know), it work rather well and it´s quite small and tidy, hardly notice it´s there.

A chain tensioner on a fixed drive chain will undoubtedly lead to ou screwing up your drive chain in a horrific accident.
Although you might find some use for a chain tug.

I have a Fuji Track and I never really had an issue with chain tension. Maybe you should tighten the nuts a bit harder and see how you go?
Thanks mate, new to this forum lark!
