i went in to carhartt on sat and as i walked into the changing room i noticed about 5 braklesses and one spok! it put my bike, sitting near the door, to shame

I just found this photo of me on my first "racing bike" in 1983.

It's an Elswick Hopper 'Thunder Flash' and as you can see is equipped with all the top line racing equipment of the day: 16 inch gaspipe frame, Cottered cranks, mudguards, pump pegs, Sturmey Archer 3 speed, 24inch steel wheels and whitewall tyres. I'm fetchingly attired in a brand new complete Motobecane factory kit - shorts, jersey, hat and gloves. I got both the bike and the kit for my 11th birthday, which was when the photo was taken.

I did 50 miles on it the next day. Fucking ace bike.

Christ, what went wrong?

BMX happened. I became interested only in doing a short bumpy distance very quickly.

I wish bike like those exist in the 90's when I was growing up, gosh darn those BMX revolution.

the best I got at the time were a day-glo yellow 24" wheels rigid MTB (emmette or summat), my father want to put me on a road bike but those were rare and expensive at the time.
