Mudguards

  • Just bought some longboards. They're only shown on the SKS website as 45mm wide... so I figured the "35mm wide" ones I bought had been mis-described.

They've arrived, and they are 35mm wide. According to SKS I've bought a product that doesn't exist! Weird.

  • Sound like you got the last 35mm one, they're getting sold out quite regularly, I wonder why.

  • FINALLY! full size (chromoplastic MTB 65mm) mudguards on commuter SSMTB

  • Well done bit of boltery and clampage there.

  • Still don't get how GB hardware works with sks guards. Pic of the interface somebody?

  • I'll try and get one.

  • Ta!

  • I would like to buy some mudguards for my Langster. There is an eyelet at the rear dropout to attach the stays, but there is no chainstay bridge. How can I get around the lack of chainstay bridge? I would rather try and fit proper mudguards rather than something like raceblades.

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Just bend a piece of aluminum over the bridge, mark and drill holes on either end of it and through the fender where it lines up and hey presto.
There are also a variety of ready-made options that are easy to install after drilling holes in the fender.

  • ^^^^^^^^ like that

  • can i have recommendations for a fenders for a road frame. It has eyelets and I will probably have 25c tyres (max 28c). Should I wait for the PDW's to come back in stock or get the planet x deal GB's or SKS equivalents?

  • ... and of course like amey says

  • Alright; I think I am pretty much these decided on VO fenders/mudguards: http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/fenders/vo-37mm-aluminum-polished-smooth-fenders.html

    Questions are;
Any idea what they'd weigh? I am guessing much more than SKS Chromoplastics.
Will armourtex powdercoat guards and stays?

  • Yes, mudguards with powdercoat are natty! Do it!

Thanks. I thought people have been talking about SKS Chromoplastic, which are not quite a round section and have bracket eye things already riveted into the guards. I guess those guards came without any pre-fitted bracket eye things?

I think the langster owner said there was no chainstay bridge at all. If I were them I would drill some small holes at the corners of the end of the guards and attach them to the stays with cable ties, or try to make a p-clip fit around the seat tube and attach to the holes where the normal chainstay clip fits.

They're alu, thereforth lighter than SKS Chromoplastic*, even my steel GB is lighter.

*the majority of the weight tend to come from the steel stay.

  • Wups, missed the lack of bridge.
Pretty sure that mine are SKS but I can't find any logos on them now.
The section isn't quite round, has two edges that are rounded.
The fenders came with the standard SKS fittings, I just drilled them out and now the Berthoud stays cover the centre holes that were left behind
Got the idea fromPeter White's site.

  • ^^ didnt know that

So between GB, Honjo and VO what is a better choice? I want black and I dont want plastic.

I put these on my parter's bike and re-ordered myself some wider (45mm) longboards. They're pretty cheap at Ribble just now if anyone is thinking of getting them (nearly a tenner less than some other shops when you include postage).

    But only in "Latte" :(

  • I bought the zefal swan for a ride about a year ago. Although I hate mudguards and avoid putting them on whenever I can. If I have no other option but to pop it on it works really well. it comes on and off quickly and does the job brilliantly.

  • Any port in a storm.

  • Right, which of these mudguards is suitable for 700c x 23c tyres, with very tight clearances?
