  • Just ordered from CRC for £19.99, free delivery, so not so bad.

  • I want to fit mudguards to my Steamroller this winter. I've previously had a set of SKS long blades (?) attached via p-clips, that were kind of ok, but the p-clips were a bit of a pain.

Any advice on best option for solid, rattle free guards attached without p-clips?

  • Nearly there now, just need the dust cap and my SKS's...
...and then that small chain ring...
...and I can fit my long cage Centaur...
...then it'll be worth a repaint...
    ...nearly there.

  • I've bought some of that nitrile rubber to make flaps out of. Is there a sensible way to cut them out... using a template or something?

  • Are mud flaps a craft now?

  • There are mounts on the trackends of the steamroller but not on the fork. The axioms are great but only work with skewers, less useful with hubs like Goldtecs.

  • Look good, but won't work unfortunately. Thanks though.

  • I was just thinking of starting an artisinal mudflap business...

  • They're definitely classed more as an art than a craft, based on trying to fit some once

  • In what way were the p clips a pain? I've been debating going down that option with one of my bikes.

  • They were never very secure, so any knock would result in the 'guards rubbing against the tyre.

Anyway, I have now bought SKS race blade pro xl's which attach via rubber clips to the stays. Fingers crossed they are easy and secure.

  • I have those, you've probably seen them on my look on rainy days. Advantages are super quick to take on and off, but they bounce alot unless you use zip ties on in addition to the rubber mounts. Also no coverage from rear wheel spray below the seat stays. I stick a piece from a rear crud road racer and zip tie to rear brake bridge to get full coverage. Can show you next time I see you.

  • Do any shops in London have a decent range of VO/ GB mudguards?

  • SKS bluemels, cyclocross fork canti. No mount points. How?
    P clips?
    Tape?
    Zip ties?

  • I used zip ties to mount a front mudguard on strangely shaped steel fork blades. I didn't expect them to last but they did, a whole winter. Zip ties around fork legs and through those SKS emergency release plastic things. I think.

  • I've got no recessed bolt on these forks, I've just looked. This is going to be ugly.

  • Modify something like this?

    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/mudguards/sks-shockboard-shockblade-26-28-mounting-kit/

Used for mounting off road mudgards to sus forks. An expander bung inside the steerer would be your mounting point.

  • That looks great but there's no hole in the bottom of my steerer.
    :(

  • Attempted fitting of Bluemels over the weekend, due to too many beers the night before the front still needs to be cut. The neighbors must have put their kids inside due to increased profanity over the course of the fitting. Good times.

Do still need flaps, tempted to make/cut a pair myself, what is the forum approved material? A1 binder plastic, HDRT sheet rubber, what thickness?

  • It's what happens when you use a fork, that wasn't yours but had come to think of as yours, that is a cross race fork in the mum bike 3. Without thinking it through properly.

  • Always the easy way with you, innit?

    :)

Different forks > bodge would get my vote

  • Yeah.....I think may happen.
