I'm going Dugast for my posh wheels. Those Vittorias are well dodg in the rain/cold/grease (basically anything that isn't bone dry Italian roads). If the Dugast are no good I'll try the Conti Competitions.
Last couple of Sundays I've spun the rear wheel on out of the saddle climbs/sprints- the Vittorias really don't grip cold greasy roads at all.
There seems to be a fair degree of support for the Conti Competitions here- I might try them if I can find a good deal.
They seem to come in a range of widths- rather than simply choosing 23, what do people recommend for going on 50mm CF rims?

£51 on Ribble which is probably the best price I've seen them. Slightly a bit too pricey for my taste unless I had them on a set of race or very best wheels. 19 or 22m widths - I wouldn't bother with the 19mm

What's your reasoning Ste_S?
19mm would be too uncomfortable?
I imagine that they would be fractionally more aerodynamic, possibly slightly lighter, and with less rolling resistance due to a smaller contact patch, but also less forgiving.
^All assumptions, however.

At my level, I'll use Challenge tubs (which have polyester casings) rather than Dugast or FMB, unless I find bargains (like the pair of Rhinos I got for £75).[/QUOTE]

Are these really good then? Have seen them about, do you use the criterium?

I have rocked the 19mm and the 22 and the 19 wasn't noticeably less forgiving...

Which would you choose if buying a pair now?

The only 19mm tubs I've ridden on are Rallys, so may well be different to Conti Comps. I found 19mm a lot more unforgiving compared to the 22(3?)mm Rally, and didn't feel as much grip around corners - but then they are Vittorias.
If you want to try 19mm put one on the front, 22mm on the back ?
-
• #233
Depends, will you be racing? Or just commuting? If the latter, there's no need for 19's
Or do this..

Ribble only have the 19mm in stock at the moment, at 75kg am I too fat to run 19mm on the back?
Or, has anyone spotted black/black 22mm Conti Competitions for sale at "good price" anywhere?
-
• #235
For the kind of riding you do, I'd suggest that 19mm tyres would be too narrow. In my opinion, they only really make sense for time triallists (and that's a moot point now that wider rims give better aerodynamics).

I got 2 X 22mm Continental Competitions, that should make Hippys head explode- tubular Conti's, twice the evil.

On the subject of Conti's, I'm suspecting the new Black Chilli Sprinters are actually more durable to glass than the (non black chilli) Sprinter Gatorksins are. Lots of glass cuts on the rear Sprinter Gatorskin, nothing on the front Sprinter yet.
Could well be just because rear's wear faster of course, but I'm liking the new Sprinter so far

These are being used for commuting?

Lots of differing opinions in Internet land about the merits of different glues.
I was tempted to use Conti Carbon rim cement, but reading comments such as the ones at the end of this article are making me think again: http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/components/tubular-adhesive/product/review-continental-carbon-rim-cement-44556/
The reason I am attracted to that glue is it having been designed to resist high thermal loads which can soften conventional glue- not what you want in the mountains.
Has anyone use the Conti carbon specific glue? If so, is it as much of a pain in the arse as it is said to be?
Is there a better option that people have used, specifically in the Alps and with carbon rims?

Yes.
Re: Conti Carbon glue - Not used it myself, but heard lots of reports (via lbs and interwebs) of difficulties using it and tubs rolling.
Your alternatives will be normal Conti Glue (the glue i use, don't know what it's like on Crabon though) and Vittoria Mastik 1. Most people over on Weight Weenies and similar places recommend Mastik 1. -

It might be because there's more weight on the rear wheel.

Sup y'all, quick question. My tubs have latex tubes so they only hold pressure for a few says. Someone once told me that I should keep them inflated anyway, although I dont remember why. Any good reason? Not using the wheels over winter so its a pain in the ass

So the tyres don't deform and flatten at the bottom.

Hang them up or remove the tubs for the winter and they'll be fine.

ah makes sense, ill just hang them up. Thanks

Any recommended shops for tubs in the London area? CX tubs in particular...would rather walk in and pick them up than have them posted.
-
• #247
If you've got liquid latex in your then your tubes can fuse inside if they're not inflated.

• #248
Condor have a good selection of CX tubs and, as sponsors of the London Cross League, I'd expect Mosquito to have some too.

Cheers Andy. Trying to get hold of Rhinos...

Condor have them and Challenge Limus (which are a bit more durable).
You can apply something like Aquaseal to the sidewalls, but the water still gets in and rots the carcass.
At my level, I'll use Challenge tubs (which have polyester casings) rather than Dugast or FMB, unless I find bargains (like the pair of Rhinos I got for £75).
