  • I've ordered a bag big enough to carry a 'proper' tub. Not sure I suscribe to the carry a 160g 19mm tyre theory. I rather spend my pennys on more veloflex carbons.

    Arundel?

  • Nah.
I need to carry other bits as well. Ordered a large topeak wedge. If its bigger than I need I'll chuck it on the fatbike.

  • I got one of these:

from Hubjub.. was very cheap (literally cheap as chips).. holds also some tools.. Its 100% old school..

  • Tut tut.

I've just dropped a pair of carbon clincher rims off to be built.

    I feel dirty.

  • Soz

  • Training wheels, right?

  • Just being curious here... What, if anything, do you guys use your jersey pockets for? I can fit spare tub, tools and CO2, food, phone, wallet, leg and arm warmers, garmin, and two bottles of drink.

  • Flare gun.

Jersey pockets are best, I think, for items that one wants to remove. Spare tyres are not one of those.. one should only need to open the "pack" from time to time to check that the tyre is still intact or when unfortunately needed.. And here springs the other issue against jersey pockets.. Anyone who has ridden about with a spare tyre under their saddle has found that a combination of the elements and rubbing can weaken and ruin them faster than the tyres on the road.. That's why they should never be wrapped too tight and best protected from both the elements and abrasion. Sticking a tyre in ones pockets--- aside from that they are probably filthy--- increases handling and that, I think, will hasten their decline.. Add some plastic foil, a bag and well.. its so large that one might was well just strap it under the saddle.. just as was de rigueur in the days before HP clinchers came to dominate the hobby mainstream..

I find it helps to have a pre-packed tool roll that you can strap to the saddle of the bike de jour, rather than trying to divy it all up in jersey pockets - there's too much variation in the pocket design of my jerseys to fit everything in without having to play tool / drink / tub tetris.

Jersey pockets - drinks, gels, phone, credit card

    Tool bag - tub, tools.

    And what Edwardz said, basically.

  • ^^ what's plastic foil? Cling film?

  • ^^ what's plastic foil? Cling film?

Anything from cling film (Seran wrap in the US) to heavier foil as used in vacuum sealers.. Which? Or even without? A question of choice and belief.. Important bit is that the tyre needs to be kept clean, dry and not get its sidewalls destroyed by vibration and its resultant abrasion...

  • The Arundel Tubi bag pictured above worked really well today, had a valve tool, tyre lever, pump and spare tub in it, stayed in place, didn't interfere with my (mighty) thighs, and in general did exactly what I wanted of it.

    Recommended, I think.

I like to have a saddlebag I can pack with essientals, and forget. I tend to have loads of food in my jersey pockets, as well as arm warmers, phone, packable rain jacket etc. Stuff that I'll be using all the time baiscally.

I do carry shite loads of food, as I'm a greedy bastard.

Sounds like it would get everything I tend to need on a 'normal' ride in it. I' want to squash a can of pitstop in there though.

    Might get one.

  • Picked up a Rapha saddle 'pack' a couple years ago in a sample sale. It has worked very well for me but not sure I'd spend the £40 RRP. Typically carry a spare tub, small multi tool, CO2, CO2 elbow valve. You do need to wrap it very tightly or it gets a bit big and loose.

On another note my fairly new (500km) Corsa has a very slow leak. Riding on Saturday it would drop from 100psi to circa 50psi every 50km or so.

If I fill it with a Vittoria Pitstop now will it shorten the life of the tub? I feel finding the hole will be difficult given the slowness of the leak.... any thoughts?

Right I'ved ordered one now. I about to have a massive surplus of bags due to my indecisiveness.

I have 3 in the post, and two on bikes. That doesnt include 4 pannier bags, and a bar bag.

Try and find the hole using water and fish out any glass etc that might be in there. Otherwise even with pitstop it might just puncture again.

  • My Topeak bag came, and it will indeed carry all my gear for styrkeprøven, as well as a 'proper' tub. When I say all I'm including a packable jacket, and a few merino warmers. So my jersey wont be all loaded up.

    Its pretty bulky though.

I'm also wondering that when the Arundrel gets here. I could buy a 125g 19mm tufo elite and pack that down real small. I should be able to get all my gear in there. But will probably have to carry, at least, the warmers in my jersey.

I prefer the second option. It'll mean, should I need to fit the Tufo, having to pull off again, to fit something 'proper'. Which is a pain. But then a roadside fitted tub is likely to need a bit of home fixing anyway no?

    Thoughts.

  • I punctured ~4km into a 65km ride in Cornwall, stripped off the Veloflex and put on the pre-glued Vittorria, completed the ride with zero issues.

I decided to swap back to a spare Veloflex that evening and therefore tore the Vit off- which was, by that time, extremely well stuck on.

As in zero need to remove and reglue in my opinion.

  • I was also thinking about getting it on straight. But thats good to know.

There is also the risk of the same thing happening to me, and needing to complete the remaining 546km on a 125g track tyre.

I'll probably grab a spare veloflex carbon, and use the large topeak bag. I can still use the Arundel for less epic rides.

  • I'd only take a "get you home" spare if I was going to head straight home tbh.

  • Tis a good point.

I dont think that applies to any of the rides, I'd bother carrying a spare on. When I get a day off daddy-ing to hit the mountains. I wouldnt be wanting to head home for a puncture.

The tufo is little more than a condom. I would suggest that its not even suited to track racing but the road!?
I think you'd be better without a spare and inflate (if its a small puncture), perhaps some latex sealant or if one will write it off anyway.. and its the rear just ride it home flat.. My suggestion for a dedicated spare is a good robust but sacrificial tubular. Suitable candidates are ones worn down, repaired and retired tyres.. Ill-suited to racing... not even for prime time training or JRA ("Just RIding Along") but perfect to rot away in a spare bag... As long as its OK and hold air.. its ...
