almost exactly what happened in my LBS here in dublin. guy walked downstairs to the customer repairs area, picked up a nice frame put it over his shoulder came back upstairs and walked out the door. staff didn't know what happened until 5 mins later.

  • Pol Paz or Lop is everywhere

  • argument aside, got a question... how come people in london once they've had a locked bike attacked or raped for bits, do they just leave it? Not going into the whole colnago thing, talking about normal/low end every day bikes, you see em everywhere abandoned after some toe rag has had just so little as a saddle or a brake, in some cases the locks are worth more than the bike and yet they just leave em? Crazy'ness, or maybe people are over insured and just don't care?

    +1

  • its liek, oh noes, someone has stolen by £5 saddle, pah, might as well buy a whole new bike.

Also with the council reclaimed ones, some go to scrap, some auction, what about bike charities/ recycling projects do they get a look in?

  • oh i can't be arsed with all this again

    just take it.

  • Yeah right you are.

I read the old posts after posting mine. This was a much better site in 2007 then it is now though.

    What do you guys think?

  • There's a bike I have walked past for about 8 months now on canary wharf, flat tyres really rusted no seat, chain not even on the cogs. And that was when I first saw it.
Nice frame though, I'll take a pic next time.

    I would never take it.

  • terribly made,

but properly shocking. people are dumb!!!

  • It would be vaguely acceptable it he was hearing hi-viz pretending to be council worker.

  • To be honest, if I had the time and money I'd take all the abandoned bikes fix them up and then put them back where I found them. Mainly becuase there is always a sad story behind an abandoned bike, so sad that if you knew you'd never want to take it... ever.

... But I ain't got the time ... or the money.

  • I ride around on a comfy Giant Revive semi recumbent for my daily commute.

Parked my bike up once and found a bike with an abandoned bicycle notice stuck to it, with one hour to go of the 48 hour warning... It had a really nice elasticated bag holder fixed to it. I could have taken it but I decided not to out of fear of being prosecuted by a nearby police car. They're worth about £30 if you buy them from Giant too!!

  • i abandoned a trek 800 steel mtb in need of rebuilding outside mine last night. 24hrs in arsenal and no-ones taken it! wtf is wrong with these thieves?

  • offer it the polo forum

  • Chainstay has a big hole in the bottom, it'll properly snap like a twig within 5mins. Hoping the scrap metal guys were passing tbh as i doubt it'll last very long as a bike.

  • How are you doing, Ed? You Tweed Running this year?

  • Very well sir, I am indeed tweeding it this year. Work is fairly dull, nearly moved to Dorset last week but that fell through which was a bit shit, but a bit of a relief as well cos we couldn't really afford it. Selling one of the tandems due to ill-advised ebaying requiring hard currency. All in all pretty good but a bit of a stressful start to the year.
    Yourself?
    Hope to catch up soon.

  • Not too bad. Been moved to the seaside for work, but still living in Norwich, so travelling just over three hours a day. Missing London still, but it's nice to have some scenery.

Will catch up over gin in April!

Also, I bumped the Carry on Camping thread - thought it might be fun to do a re-run.

  • Found an small old ladies folder this morning abandoned in the street near where we live.
Picked it up took it home. My daughter loves it but I reported it to the Police's Safer Neighbourhood team and they picked it up this afternoon. In one month we can pick it up if its not been claimed.

It felt good to do the right thing - if it goes back to its home then karma if not then my daughter could have a project to wait for.

  • Best thing to do - you'll probably end up getting it anyway, but with a clear conscience.

  • So, on my commute I always see this beautiful, beautiful Freddie Maertens bike just sort of... abandoned, and every time I see it, with its taco'd wheels and rusting seatpost, I just want to save it. It needs rescuing.

And I need another bike. The frame is in perfect condition and it's my size...
    But, it's not mine...

Now the bike has been there at least three months, wheel stomped for more than one, so my question is: Is it wrong to 'steal' it? Of course I would make as much effort as I can to contact the owner, but is there a proper way of going about this? What do I do?

TLDR; Abandoned bike needs rescuing, how do?
