I love Lynch too... And Scorcese... Those are my top four... I'd probably sneak Spielberg in there too...

Cronenberg plays the bad guy in NightBreed - check it out. Not the greatest horror movie but one of my faves for sure.
I have it on VHS. In a previous life I was mental about Clive Barker. I also have the book on the making of the film and Barker's original novel.
As an aside I managed to get Nightbreed from, I think, an old colleague and film obsessive who amongst many other banned/unreleased things at the time had the uncut version of the original RoboCop (approved for a Belgian audience if memory serves), which in the scene where Murphy is killed is nothing short of disgusting (in the version I have he rises for his final round of gunfire already missing an arm - the Belgian cut shows its removal and much more besides), as is much of the violence in other scenes in what's a very violent film in its UK release state anyway.

Depends what your looking for...
Halloween >The Fly>The Thing>Shivers>They Live>Dead Ringers>....Though Carpenter does write great soundtracks
The Fly belongs at the head of that list, then The Thing followed by Halloween (both greats still).
The Thing is so perfectly named and representative of it not messing about in preference of getting the job done - real direct, balls out gear, no shortage of gore/action. But - The Fly has an emotional whack like no other. As much as it's a horror piece it's a human tragedy, with impeccable acting from Goldblum, let alone the effects (probably matched by those of The Thing). I'm a bit nutty about The Fly and finish up equally exhausted come the end each time I watch it, although the sequel was unbearably silly.

I haven't watched The Fly since it came out... The Thing is faultless...
Currently downloading Stereo, Cronenberg's first movie... Saw it at a Cronenberg film festival back in the early 80s, couldn't fathom it then... Let's see how I get on this time...

Just been to watch Blue Ruin - very impressed!
An overarching sense of inevitability, and tense buildups to violent set-pieces worthy of some of the darker Coen brothers' stuff, all shot with a (budget-dictated?) economy of style that really suited the story.
Great stuff.

Speaking of John Carpenter, I was blown away by Assault on Precinct 13 when I first watched it as a schoolkid, and the theme tune made a huge impression on me too. Unlike anything I'd ever seen before.
I haven't watched the remake for obvious reasons.

^ Julie's Theme, from that soundtrack, is one of my favourite pieces of music from any movie ever... Absolutely beautiful...

Speaking of The Thing - this is a pretty great piece by Stuart Cohen, producer of the film.
The Fly is the superior film though. I remember sneaking a watch of it on VHS when I was waaaay too young for it. Very nearly shat my pants. Good times.

Listening to Carpenter's greatest OST hits now... Mesmeric...
PS I'd have to add Sergio Leone to my fave directors list...

I need to see that version, looking for that scene on youtube and the like perhaps someone has posted it. What happened to Paul Verhoeven?... Oh I just remembered 'Showgirls'.
Watching Enemy Mine now...
Me and my brother watched that film so many times!
I'm a bit nutty about The Fly and finish up equally exhausted come the end each time I watch it, although the sequel was unbearably silly.
At the time I thought it was ok, but over time I have come to the same conclusion its just inferior to the first film. I saw bits of it again, and it just has not aged well.
I haven't watched the remake for obvious reasons.
The remake is not bad, think of it as a different film and not a remake and it is quite satisfying.

Frank was interesting. I came out of the cinema a bit disappointed but the more I think about it, it's grown on me. There are some questionable elements and acting but Fassbender puts on a good performance. I'd recommend it just as something different to watch and better than some of the kack in the cinemas at the moment like Plastic

Actually The thing has a flaw if you understand the guys at the start chasing the dog... the whole premise is given away

Exactly why I couldn't watch Titanic. I mean, duh...
Probably my two favourite directors... Carpenter wrote some of the best film scores ever, he only knocked them himself up cuz he couldn't afford a composer*... Which makes it all the more incredible, he's a genius...
