Having a bit of a binge whilst on hols, we watched The Princess And The Frog tonight, an old Disney from about ten years ago, first time Iāve seen it, think The Jungle Book set in New Orleans, fabulous and a great soundtrack, one to keep the whole family happy.

Angst (1983)
A sick in the head serial killer gets released from prison and starts killing again. That plot is as old as dirt by now, but the sheer intensity of the acting, the writing and content of the voice over (inspired by real serial killers) and the mood/music really make it stand out. Pretty intense stuff.
And there's no joy in the violence in it. It's not as unpleasant as hanekes funny games, but don't expect entertainment.

Melville flicks are excellent

I want to go to the cinema tonight.
Should I see Ready Player One or The Han Solo film.
Or something else, in that vein?

I enjoyed RP1, can see me watching in the future on a lazy bank holiday afternoon.
Not seen Solo (going tomorrow)
Avengers Infinity War, only see it if you have seen them most of the other Marvel films and are invested in it, otherwise avoid.

Sweet. RP1 it is.
Conveniently it is on at Finchley Road. Which is a simple Thameslink journey from HH to West Hampstead.
Scratch that, I'll go to Kentish Town then cut over the heath on the pinkadventuremissileā¢. Gnarly.

Solo tonight, fast paced, punchy and lots going on, I really enjoyed it.

Solo is going to age very badly, it's got all the makings of being the next speed 2.
edit - it also reminded me what a pointy headed twat darth maul is.

Enjoyed avengers take it for exactly what it is.
I thought deadpool was a far greater stand alone film.
Solo I'm not particularly interested in, although I'm sure I'll end up watching it at some point.

Should I see Ready Player One
Nobody should ever see Ready Player One.

Fully agree, took the kids to see it, so ball achingly boring.

Anon (Netflix film) not bad, bit light on the world / sci-fi themes. Enjoyable enough.
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0084390/
The ballad of Narayama. In a poor 19th century rural Japanese village, everyone who reaches the age of 70 has to climb a nearby mountain to die. An old woman is getting close to the cut-off age, and we follow her last days with her family.
It's not as grim as it sounds, in some ways it's a very humane film with humour. But the things the village does to survive, well... Let's say it really made me think.
Worth a watch.

Deleted to avoid spoilers.

I thought the ending was great, kinda surprising at first but on reflection it makes a lot of sense. Pretty rare these days to find a film that's rooted in actual demonology rather than just some random spooky scenarios.
-
• #14393
Actual demonology?
-
• #14394
Yup. Obviously it's fictional, but written lore on Paimon and his pals and what they get up to dates back to the 1600s. I guess they're like physical manifestations of human weaknesses and insecurities, and I thought the film explored that angle of it really well.

Yeah spoilers tho.
-
• #14396
That's about as much of a spoiler as revealing that there's a twist at the end.
-
• #14397
Kind of a big spoiler then...

Only if you're up to date with your occultism

Spoiler alert: horror film features a demon nobody has heard of. Also Dumbledore dies.
Ready Player One was good fun other than the schmaltzy last 10 minutes.
Joaquin Phoenix was fantastic in Never Really Here but the film never really took off, although maybe it was never really meant to.
