  • I used to get pain but it stopped after a while, you changed anything on your mallet recently, Bil?

  • I use a off cut of bar grip over the top of the pole and taped down

No, had pain always. I think a nerve is getting pinched, similar to carpal's syndrome.

  • Oh, I say!

    adjusts monocle

  • What the hell is that?

  • Looks like a walking cane with a massive crystal bauble on top... You'll need one soon enough...

Has Lori ordered you a zimmer frame yet? Because I reckon you'll needing one soon, judging by the number of your FB updates that include the words "back" "fucked" & "pain"...

  • irony overload, Bill makes joke about someone being old and decrepit

  • Rob, are you stalking me?

  • no, but it's a mighty fine idea

  • Reported for harassment.

  • damn, is there a three eighteen strikes rule?

  • Trolling Bill is lots of fun, Rob... I can't blame you...

Apparently it's a "pimp cane". Go for it, Buffalo Bling!

  • Question: I am getting pain in my palm, in the spot where I rest in the top of the mallet when I'm in goal. I want to pad, or otherwise modify, the top of the mallet. What are other people using?

I've got a champagne cork*, trimmed the part the normally fits inside the neck of the bottle and stuck this in the top of the pole/shaft. First version wobbled all over the place even when firmly taped up (currently just using hocky tape on the grip), so tried again but this time with a long wood screw with a wide flat head through the full length of the cork to make it more rigid and again a couple of layers of tape over the top to secure it. This works fine, looks tidy-ish and the step up from taped pole up to cork gives a natural 'stop' at the end of the mallet so it feels less likely to slip from my hand. I guess it's a few extra grams, but it's not at the business end where it would matter more. It's definitely more comfortable when tripod-ing in goal and as an added bonus I feel less likely to impale a fellow player through my general cack-handedness whilst playing.

(*hey, I made my mallet at Xmas, ok!?!)

Bling? WTF is bling? Do I look like I would know what bling is?

^ On topic answer, for which, thanks!

  • Champaign cork is what I used to use, didn't make my mallet near Christmas, anyway problem is it probably will just slowly dissintigrate (as have all 'corks' I've used both natural and man made). I now just go for a coin and tape.

I think the problem is you are leaning on your mallet too much rather than your mallet isn't padded enough (if it's a trapped nerve the only way to not hurt it is to not put as much weight on it, padding your malet won't change the weight going through your hand)...

So my suggestion is the opposite, remove everything from the end of your mallet and try staying in goal for 20 mins, either you'll fuck up your hand worse or you won't lean on the malet as much.

  • I use two short strips of foam/cork bar tape in a X over the capped shaft (using those little black plastic ends that come with the Perros poles) then wrap the whole lot in a load of hockey tape.

  • A few of us in Brighton use these little rubber caps that our local hardware store sells. They're meant to be for the end of curtain poles apparently.. but they look more like the rubber door stoppers. Anyway, they fit really well just placed over the top of the pole, they're light and really comfortable. For added security you can incorporate them into your grip when wrapping your mallet. I'll bring some up to London next time, or have a look for some at your local hardware store.

  • I've got about 1cm of neoprene stacked on the end of my mallet, works pretty well. I used a big lump of balled up denim before but it just got in the way. I found myself holding onto the lump instead of the pole when handling the ball, which meant I had a lot less control. Champagne cork sounds good though.

  • I think if you're hand is hurting from leaning on your mallet you're putting too much weight on the mallet; stay upright on your wheels and keep your mallet free for playing the ball!
