I've just built my first mallet... I've christened her Mrs Pepperpot, she's getting on famously with Mr Cheeto... Test run at Souths tomorrow, I used Joel's method but instead of a regular nut used a rawlplug nut type thing (pic added)... Jono knows what they're called, I can't remember... Harvey single-capped head, Perro pole...

Self-clinching nut, or blind nut? The type with a spikey washer style underside are pretty cool (don't move once tightened).

My blind nut experiment failed, I've put an M6 nut with a little flange in there now and it seems to be holding OK...

Just want to double check that I'm not totally off on how folks are making mallets now?

Am I correct in thinking that people are only drilling through 1 side of the pipe and then filling or cutting grooves in the end of the shaft and screwing through the un-drilled side of the pipe into a piece of dowling or some other form of fixing within the shaft?

I'm doing exactly that ^, piece of piss...

Does anyone think a mallet making session at LMNH (or similar) would be a good idea? Or does everyone have it nailed now?

Maybe wait a couple months for some more beginners to start playing (we're hopefully doing a big beginners session for Bike Week at Hackney Downs)?

I'm quite confident I can make a mallet but I'm lacking the tools so a little session on a sat or sunday morning would be good to pick up tips and make a few mallets on mass

Question: I am getting pain in my palm, in the spot where I rest in the top of the mallet when I'm in goal. I want to pad, or otherwise modify, the top of the mallet. What are other people using?

I used to put a penny coin on the top of the tube then stack a couple of those pads you put on chair legs to stop the floor scratching, bit of inner tube over the lot then tape up as normal
