  • If you don't mind sharing, I'm sure some would like to know where you're getting dominators for less than 100 quid from?

  • Sure.. Stif cycles! But only two sizes left so you have to be lucky..

  • bike porn thread?

  • I need some new road shoes as mine didn't like the little skid stop outside my house last night. They were never quite right anyway.

I was thinking Mavic Avenirs, buy have only read bad to ambivalent things on here. Also read mdcc_tester talking about Lake CX170 as being decent and in a slightly lower price bracket, but having SPD fittings as well as the 3-hole fitting brings out a weird snob in me. Would it really, really be worth shelling out the extra for Sidi Genius, or what else should I consider?

  • The shape of your foot vs the shape of the last used by the manufacturer.

  • The only prices for the Mavic and the Lake that make it worthwhile are online, and they seem harder to find in shops where I could try them on.

I have tried Sidis that are one size too small, and width-wise they felt good.

  • I've worn Lakes and Mavics. Sidi lasts are perfect for my feet, and Lakes fit well too. Mavic were close to Sidi, but I'm convinced they curve inwards a little more at the toe box. This proved a problem, as despite having a razor thin achilles, I have a 'normal' toe box, and little toe irritation occurred on longer rides.

Specialized shoe lasts are way to curved for my straightish feet.

Sidis I run 1 euro size higher than 'normal' shoes. I need the same size in Shimano, but they're way too wide for me.

  • Cheers for your advice, and your general 'better safe than sorry' tone has probably stopped me rushing off and potentially wasting my money.

I decided to go and try on all of the ones that I could rather than buying ones I thought might fit online. Sidis weren't really an option in the end, and Mavic Avenirs, despite their strange ideas on sizing (UK 12 = EU 47.33, UK 13 = EU 48.67), seem to fit alright in a 12. Interestingly,* the Mavic Razors, which are basically Avenirs but with the MTB sole, were a little tight in a 12, but the Avenirs fit just right.

    *Depending on your definition

I have a pair of Avenirs. Good points - cheap online, fit well, light, good buckle design. Bad point - I get hot foot quite badly - perhaps a sign they are not very stiff?

I am owed a pair of shoes courtesy of my accident - I'll be trying Sidis.

  • got a old half knackered pair of sidi eagle 9's (44) shimano cleats stuck but good, front replaceable soles, pretty worn down, rear replaceable heels good.
    slight split under right foot.
Only ideal as a spare pair, or someone wanting to try clipless, very cheaply.
only want a tenner for them, + a beer
    collection wests.
    NO POSTING ETC.....
(heel soles worth more alone as you can't buy them seperately / anymore)
no stoopid questions, all the answers are above.

  • you ask me "any pictures" I'll charge you 20 quid.

  • Very good deal. I hope someone with good intentions takes it up. A no trying to resell on Ebay caveat might be an idea.

  • sounds like a good base for some custom spd trainers.

  • if you have ever had a pair of sidi's, you'd know the sole is one piece.
    sowwy shoomo

  • Nothing a knife wouldn't sort out.

  • which is fine, if you can cut all the studs off the soles, enough to use as a plate inside another shoe.

  • Anyone have any tips for cleaning/de-stinking my ergo's?

After repeated drenching and slow drying recently they have started to smell so bad I find it hard to be in the same room as them. Actually had to wear overshoes today, just to keep the stench at bay. Could really do without having to pay 200 quid for a new pair

  • Soak in soapy warm water, then have a good scrub with a brush, stuff with newspaper and leave to dry. When they are half dry remove the newspaper and place some charcoal bricks inside until dry.

  • charcoal bricks?

  • how about soapy water > newpaper > hairdryer > talc overnight?

  • Put them in the freezer overnight. Remember to take them out well in advance of your next ride though!

  • charcoal is used for extracting odours, things like odoureater insoles have a layer of it in them

  • Good to know

  • Baking powder is a great odour extractor too, if you have no charcoal bricks to hand.

Put it into something small and open that will fit inside the shoe, like a little dish or small plastic drugs bag.
