Aye, I might go back to the simplicity of clipless. I'll give these straps a few more days. But so far I'm not overly impressed!!

i came a cropper in clips and straps a few months ago, fucked my foot up all nicely. they were too tight though, my own fault really.

+1 for clipless. fuck cages.

Thought I'd revive this thread rather than start another one on clips vs clipless.
SPD shoes got soaked in last nights deluge before and after souths, sodding things weren't dry this morning, so I thought 'no biggie, I'll fit the toe clips and straps.'
Bad move, went from having ultimate control to feeling like it was my first time on a fixed.

Number of crashes* with clipless pedals and a front brake: 5
Number of crashes with clips and straps brakeless: 1 - and that was because I was riding with my eyes closed.*as in crashes serious enough to warrant a spell off the bike or a visit to hospital
But that's just me.

honestly just HTFU, it took me about 3 weeks worth of riding to get used to clips, I even surprise myself by how quickly I was able to flip the pedal and slide the feet in.

El squire, get them power grips back on! Super-high 'bail factor'. ;P
(not @ el squire) - I don't get riding with clips loose.. surely you can't get the pull up on the return part of your pedalling?

Yeah you can, you just need to push forwards as well as up. It's just different technique.
@edscoble: yeah, I used clipless first on fixed, so arguably most of the crashes may be due to being inexperienced, but SPDs unclipping was a fucking curse, make no mistake.

Have ridden clips and straps since I started riding and developed a riding style and a good level of control with them but recently Big Daddy Wayne lent me some SPD's to see if I liked them and after a weekand a bit I think they're awesome.
When I went back to my trusty old clips and straps the level of control just wasn't the same.
Obviously if I went back to clips and straps I'm pretty sure that I'd regain the control I previously had with them.

Put newspaper in your shoes change, the the first lot after an hour, ideally try and get one more change of paper in before bed then stuff with fresh paper for overnight, dry shoes in the morning.

Did that and put them in the warmest spot without putting them too close to the radiator, the tounge and inners appear to be made from ridiculously absorbent padding!
Oh well, you live and learn, not like its first time I've got my shoes wet.
I think doubles would probably feel more secure if you're used to the contact you have with SPD's.

hairdryer, managed to dry my shoes in 10 minutes using a hairdryer.

Good call on the hairdryer front, girlfriend says she's going to get a new hairdryer, needs to HTFU.

Are you sure you did not line your shoe with a sanitary towel? The ones with wings do make good insoles (they stay put) however you need to change them when wet as they never dry out quite right.

+1 Haha!
Was contemplating a sanitary towel/nappy joke! Didn't want to knock the shoes to hard as the were kindly lent by BDW.
-
• #69
Well I know for a fact that BDW is a big user of Tenna lady, so there is your problem, I personally find them too bulky.
-
• #70
I pictured him as an Always Ultra kind of a guy.

Nah, not enough for BDW.

Don't run the clips too tight. Thats all really.
as he said - above
Slingbacks + toeclips = fail
I don't anything about 'slingbacks' but my catapiller boots (steel toecapped, anti-slip soles) + toeclips = complete and total failure (hmmm, i wonder if its the anti-slip that causes me problems). I'm returning clipless!

(trawling old threads for advice)
point 1. if you're looking to dry out footwear nappies are the way forward. (newborn for size 6 and below, 3-4 months for above -ish)
Point 2. Still can't use my clips with normal trainers, work fine with all-stars/dapper brogues etc. grrrr cunt.

Same way you got into them...

Stumbled across my problem. My toe straps have a narrower guide than normal pedals, this makes it harder to get on, and harder to sit right.
Pedals with no side bits, like mine:
Pedals with specialised sides and wider guide for the straps:
Looks like I need to get me a new set o pedals.
