Is there an 'Attempted stolen bike' thread?
This from a mate:
Some dude tried to steal my bike last week.... whilst I was riding it!!!
I was cycling along at a fairly steady pace down Hungerford Rd N7 at 7:30pm last wednesday...when this little fucker comes out of nowhere... runs full pelt into me and I go flying off my bike onto the road... I turned round and lunged at the bike and grabbed the frame... I was on the ground trying to wrench it from his grip, he was standing above me pulling it back towards him.... whilst laying into me with several kicks to the head and face for good measure... this whole thing lasted about 10 seconds til some cars came down the street & beeped and flashed their lights... he ran off sans bike.. and I jumped back on and peddled as fast as I could out of there!
So... I guess the moral of the story here is don't cycle down dark, quiet, cycle friendly streets at night... stick to the main roads. And 2. wear a helmet! It was my best defense in this situation...She's a female also so I guess they don't care who they kick in the head! She's got a fairly low key commuter bike too.
Sad times.
really sad, but i'm not really surprised. after all, if cheap scumbags cant nick your bike cos you used a strong lock, they might as well start getting them when they're not locked -- by using force against you. as i mentioned before, i find thieves to be the lowest level of this species, if that, therefore they go after easier targets. and being female (no offence intended) makes one weaker and more vulnerable.

Hello all,
I've found this seller on ebay, and while I would never openly accuse someone of being a thief, a lot of his items/descriptions seem to be extremely dodgy.
A case in point would be this listing for a Charge Plug which is, firstly, described as XL when the pictures would suggest otherwise; secondly, it is described as having "gear cables in perfect condition" (WTF?); and thirdly, referred to as a "hybrid".
Also, while he claims to have receipts for his bikes, he can't even spell the word ("reciept") which would seem to undermine him. Further to this, all his listings seem to only be for one day and they seem to sell for well under what you would expect - an extremely nice non-standard spec 2008 Condor Pista went for £250 last night:
Again, he claims to have a receipt ("reciept"), but quotes the frame to be made of aluminium, then photographs the deda sticker on the frame - someone who had genuinely bought this bike would know exactly what every part of it was, and let's face it, they would be unlikely to sell it on in a 24 hour sale just a year after purchase.
I don't know what you can really do about people like this, all I can say is that scum like him makes me sick, and for people to check his page if they lose their bike:

hello, my charge plug got stolen outside of my yoga studio last wednesday on Vestry St, just off city road. It was locked up with super strong kryptonite lock. I think it was a professional job as both the lock and the bike have totally vanished and now I think of it, there was an odd old white guy just hanging around with a bike leaning against a tree I'm guessing it must of been him. I don't really feel like I have any hope of having it returned and the police have already closed the case! However, I am posting here because just the Sunday before some kids tried to grab me off my bike at a zebra crossing on clerkenwell road, ( I was on my way to yoga weirdly at 8.30am). So I am guessing that not only is my yoga practice totally cursed but also that things are getting even more vicious out there. Also, does anyone have any advice on the best way of locking up my bike when I get a new one. The lock I had was the one just under the forgetaboutit one in terms of strength. I chose that one because I thought it would be more versatile.

Make sure your bike is locked to something solid not a short post where it can be picked up and lifted over. Lock wheels to frame to post. 2 locks if possible. A decent d-lock is a must (£50+).
As I was locking my bike up the other day, there was a new looking fixed wheel bike leaned up against a secure bike stand, locked with 2 decent big locks but not to the actual stand!
It could've easily been picked up and carried off to a workshop, shed, garden etc where power tools can easily be used (in no rush) to remove the locks.This was in Angel too and a £500+ bike...

what does one do if you spot your stolen bike is being sold on ebay ?
anybody got any ideas ?

If its your bike I'd bid on it and buy it...
... and if you've posted here or anywhere else remove them and make sure no one else mentions it.
Then organise cash on collection - try and get as many details as possible...
...then if you want the macho ans. go and cut the guys fingers off and shag his daughter...
... but it might be better, once you've got all the details I'd contact the police and get their advice.
EDIT: if you do go for the macho opion, remember to have some back up - no matter how hard you are its not worth risking by yourself. Although the police aren't going to do much at least if they are contacted then the guy may face a charge.

Might not really be relevant, (And could maybe warrant a seperate "Where not to leave bikes in London" thread) but I was in the corner shop at the bottom of Rosendale Road in Herne Hill for 5 minutes yesterday and locked my bike up outside with a good strong Abus d-lock. Came out to discover 5 or 6 youths crowded round it attempting to pry the lock with a crowbar. (they would need more than a crowbar on that lock I'd have thought - but I would have been pissed if they'd damaged my frame or spokes). A loud "OI. Get away from my bike you little fucks!" sent them all legging it off in different directions.
Just thought I'd post this as a warning for people living in my neck of the woods. I probably will be wary of leaving my bike locked up around there again.... I was only in the shop for 5 minutes and the little ferretty-looking twats were like a fly round shit. I did consider phoning the police, but had a chat with the guy in the corner shop about it and he seemed to know them all by name and I'd seen one or two of them around there before, so decided to leave it this time..

The frame is unique, the paint was stripped and then lacquered onto the bare metal.
all names and logos removed from the parts.
