Audax rides

  • The past week I've been going to bed far too late...

Seems like this isn't changing anytime soon

  • Icy roads, gruelling headwind, severe and sometimes thigh deep flooding. I think the Mere 200k is now the worst audax I have ever done. Kudos to the guy who's first audax it was who didn't throw his bike in a hedge and stomp off shouting Fuck This Shit

Did you manage to complete it?

Oh my god! I was a forgotton-entry away from doing this. Thought the weather looked pretty reet yesterday actually but obvs wouldn't do much for ice&flooding!

  • I think I might do this this weekend - http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/WW08/ - 100km starting in Edenbridge. Sunday most likely if I am on my own but Saturday coudl ork if anyone else is interested? You'd need to contact the organiser prety quick to get an entry in though!

I'd look to get to London Bridge station for about 8ish to start for 9ish...

  • To be fair, I didn't actually ride through the thigh deep water. I was saved by a pressing need to change my socks and stopped up just before the flood. I was saved the endeavour by a couple of riders who where coming back after realising they wouldn't get through.
The ice was mercifully confined to back lanes between car tracks. Not really dangerous but made progress slow because you couldn't really predict what was coming.
My impression of the route is that it's a bit lanesy for a winter ride and might be better suited to later on in the year. I might revisit it as a Permanent at some point. Finding a good winter ride is difficult though.

  • ^Ah! I thought I recognised the name on yacf!

I was the brown guy on the yellow steel bike, did we cross paths?

Don't think so - I didn't see many other riders ... Beard, grey jacket, bright blue Dolan - ring any bells?

I made it a long day out by riding up to Chalfont and then back again through the downpour - good ride though.

Hmm. Might be interested. Probably have to be Sat for me though, unless you were up for a proper early start on Sun. (We're meeting friends for a late lunch. Think I'd have to be back at London Bridge for 12 to have a fighting chance of making myself decent and not getting into trouble ...)

  • Hi - yeah Saturday should be okay, maybe a little later though as I'm out Friday night - 10ish at London bridge?

  • Hi - I'm going to have to give tomorrow a miss now, I'm trying to shake of some endless virus or something which is really getting in the way of my training for the LEL...

I'll see what I can muster from my legs on Sunday out in Essex as training...

  • No worries - I know I'd been a bit silent. It may be a good thing as I want to try out a new build tomorrow and I'm not sure dropping straight into a 100k ride would have been the best start, so maybe a shorter day in Essex.

(That is, a shorter day in Essex for me tomorrow, to try the thing out. Still on for some perms later on, probably into March though looking at my diary.)

  • Anyone here down for 100 at Dial Post, Worthing next saturday? I'm hoping to get a late entry ... forgot to sort it last week!!

  • Just a note to the late entry merchants, I'm quite happy to take entries online for The Dean 300k right up to the Thursday before the event.

It's the first 300k of the season and a brilliant classic of a ride. A lot of riders really enjoy this one.

  • I'll ride it if you put big flashing sign posts up or supply a navigator ;)

  • I'm going out to do the routecheck ride two weeks beforehand. I will gladly show you route then if you want to tag along.

  • Ah, so you know the way already then.

I'll put you down as a yes.

  • Haha.. I did almost manage to follow a 100k reliability ride gpx course recently.

Consulting route sheets enroute just doesn't do it for me. #BEEP# Turn, TURN NOW! is more like it.

  • @tsk I wish. 300's a bit far for me. Wig Worland's photos of a previous year went some way to show what lovely country it passes through.

    Maybe one day...

  • Hippy, I have a gpx file that you're welcome to use.

Skully, I'll put you down for next year.

  • I've put it in the diary so at least I'll think about it. Hmm.. how many hours of daylight do we have in March?

  • I'm doing the Dean too, it look fantastic.

    Useful website for Sunrise/Sunset time.

  • Sunrise is usually at the start at 6am and then I think about 6pm for sunset, maybe a bit later. Average ride time is around 16hours so about 4 hours in darkness. I know you're pretty fast but I wouldn't like to promise that you can get round without having to put the lights on.

  • I can promise you, with my minimum of 4 hours 'lost time', I will not complete it in daylight.

  • Obscure cross-thread reference which some people will get:
