Germans/Dutch prefer MTB/Citybikes gone tourer with "Butterfly on Acid" bars or flat bars.

UK cyclists prefer Road bikes gone tourer with drops.

Cultural thing driven by history/economy etc.

I like the pun, but IMO if its still going to be a grip shift you may as well plonk it on the bar end:

... is the difficultly because the cable pulls forward and back, rather than just having tension and then releasing it? I'd have though with all the electric stuff out the smart move is just to copy shimano and then you could mount shifters where ever you like.

It's annoying Rohloff don't shift with just one cable, else Ye Olde non-indexed friction/barends would do the job.
