All that weight would remove the fun/joy/freedom of riding a bike.
A car would be more appropriate here. -

shit, you'd better tell him that before he goes any further with it all.

Would it actually kill Rohloff to make a drop bar shifter? The gripshift-on-scaffolding look screams anti-porn every time I see it.

I don't think most german tourists would go for a drop bar set-up, this is what I've seen the most of. I think it makes sense, given Rohloff's refusal to build anything remotely lightweight.

Such a long tour on toeclips? Why not clipless..
The last long tour I did, about 1500 miles round britain camping, I decided on walking shoes and flat pedals with straps. I wanted to be mobile in case anything went wrong with the bike, and also just to be able to dump the bike and walk off road up mountains if I felt like it (which I did). I didn't want the weight of an extra pair of shoes. They are also much more comfortable, cusioning your foot. I have found cycling shoes can start to give me pins and needles after a long time.

This sounds good, did you write about it perhaps? The trip, not the shoes : )

A car would be more appropriate here.I'm sort of with you here. But I'd say a motorbike... and probably still try and drop some kit. But each to his own and its always impressive stuff to see.
That said I'd love to do a ride around lake Titicaca.
