We went one further on the DIY in the 90s when we travelled with bikes more often. A threaded rod with a bunch of captured nuts and washers is run through a few blocks of 2x wood which are screwed down onto a piece of 1x6. Took no time to construct and was solid.

Tester's right they're designed to flex. I could flex the seat stays on my bike enough to get brake rub before I slacked off the brake cable
