people claim that 853 rides nicely.
What is said is that the joints in 853 are stiffer due to the air hardening qualities of 853 and perhaps that affects the ride ?

i can't say anything since i've not ridden an 853, but if it goes by previous claims with other tubesets, the ride quality is more to do with who made it and how they made it.

And if the same person made it the same way but from 631 could you tell? I really do think too much importance is put on it all and don't believe anyone can actually tell the difference as the differences in metal are too small for the rider to be able to detect through a seat and with suspension created by the tyres.

Definitely worth reading this book as it gives a realistic view that gets past marketing and hype. Only one mans opinion of course but I tend to agree with a lot of what he says.

everything ive seen (2 bikes) from hobbs of barbican have been lovely, classic british at its best

I'm not sure that's porn prav. The welds aren't exactly elegant... just consider Courage Bikes mentioned earlier and these do not begin to compare.

Loving that Hobbs of Barbican frame though, especially the thin seat stays and the way they meet the drops.
