S1mon: yeah, they look ok, shame u cant see the hubs a bit better...i think for the money u could get the same rims but ensure a good hub rather than gambling...
from what i can see they look like profile hubs (i think thats the name i have one on a wheel i bought from cavendish for £60 about a year ago)

Buy them in bits to spread the cost and get exactly what you want.
Then build them yourself not that tricky really.

You will then get a wheelset to suit your needs with the satisfaction that you built them yourself. Also, as and when things need replacing you#ll have the tools and know/how to do it without having to buy whole new wheels.Built my first pair last weekend, quite enjoyed it.
if i wasn't such a spastic when it comes to stuff like that i would but i know i'd cock it up

Defo formula hubs (RRP~£45 the pair).
Decent enough wheelset, and not bad price IMHO.
Still say build your own if you're not in a hurry though ;) -

nice one. i'll ask around here then might think about a self build. thinking it might go the same way as what thecrane's thinking though!
guess a bit more searching's in order then! shame! ;) -

Good chance you will make a cock-up (I made two or three). Just make sure you give yourself time from the outset, unlace the cocked up bit and redo (Sheldon Browns advice really).
Mine still need a little truing (doing this in my frame aided by zip ties as guides) but they look great (to me at least).

I've been deliberating over what rims to go with for this bike:
The hubs will be polished high-flange Phils and the spokes silver also (36h 3-cross rear, 32h radial front). I'll be keeping the front brake so a proper braking surface is essential for the front one.
Open Pros would be the sensible option but I'm drawn to the 'bright silver' (very shiny but not mirror-polished) deep Vs and even the black H+sons (not the silver ones mind).
I'm after good quality sturdy wheels that aren't too heavy and that look good too. I won't be doing tricks on 'em.
Anyway, just curious to see what people think...?
thanks.

Open Pro's
You could then get them polished if you wish or go for the black version, or even the ceramic for the front braking surface.

i think you're probably right, it just seems a bit dull. So does the finish in fact; i was thinking of something polished to go with the hubs and fork.
I've ruled out polishing cos it's a laborious process and you then have to have them re-anodised to preserve the shininess.
black h+sons would be wank, right?! twice the money to look twice the prick...

I think the h+son rims look pretty cool but love the classic look - always think polishing looks a bit weird!

A polished DT Swiss 1.1? Not that it needed to be polished in the first place.

^they're not great^
I'm running Campag omega vs. Black on the rear, silver on the front. It's all about the mismatch for 2009!

what aren't great?
Ed, I'm pretty sure those DT 1.1s don't come in polished? just grey and black.
-
• #291
Sorry, I owned** DT 1.2.**
My bad.
I know nothing about 1.1.

what about rigida dp18s? they look like they'll fit the bill well. only thing is they aren't supposed to be great for braking on.

• #293
ceramic open pro
-
• #294
i'd vote for polished deep-v's.
-
• #295
Yeh, forget about cutting edge braking and polish up some DP18s.
Cheap, and no worse than Velocitys.
-
• #296
DP18's, hi polished, with braking surface. Not that I intend to do any. They're pretty bootiful.
-
• #297
whizz, where from? did they come that polished or have you shined them up yourself?

DT Swiss 1.1, it doesn't look grey, just silver;

low profile rims are the way forward IMO. but if you wanna have the front radial lace why not get an open pro for the back and a deep section eg. H plus for the front
