The fasting is not so much about weight loss as getting rid of the right sort of fat - i.e. core fat. It also has good effect on IGF (insulin-like growth factor) levels and other bits of biochemistry associated with cell death/wonky metabolism/disease. It's long been thought that low calorie diets can promote longevity and prevent disease - particularly cancer. It's not faddy because it's supposed to be a permanent change.

I'm thinking of giving it a go too - not so much for weight loss but for the other health benefits. Just need to give some thought to a >600 calorie menu...
bowl of oatmeal with semi fat milk, some raspberries, cup of tea
I am definitely doing this so we can compare notes

chicken breast/salmon steak/ tofu/ chicken curry/ chick peas with side salad cup of tea and a banana
I have a small kitchen scale which makes it pretty easy to calorie count

I was thinking miso soup with small amount of noodles and veg might be a goer. Tasty and filling. In fact, I think I'll just eat soups on those days.

Surely 600 calories- pint and a half of lager?
This calorie counting bollocks is easy.

Soup = Filling
Good Idea, but how much soup is 600 cal? Is the same as with lager ?
-
• #4559
By soup I mean either miso or chicken stock with veg and a tiny bit of noodles/chicken/prawns in it.

"ooh, that cake looks tasty. What would I rather do, eat the cake or lose a few hundred calories?"
Eat the cake, and have less food for dinner.

He cut 2800 calories a week from his diet, it's a big presumption that he would not have achieved the results he got by spreading that more evenly over the week.

I am currently wearing a medium t-shirt, and it isn't skin-tight.
This is a revelation.

And back upon the wagon I place my large rear end.
10 weeks of pretty hardcore low carb did me good earlier in the year (probably the leanest of my adult life) and then I had a few months of trying to move cities, plenty of sleeping on sofas, crap access to cooking facilities and general laziness set in. Back to square one.
182-155, can it be done? We shall see. . .I have made an excel spreadsheet with graph and everything!
Edit: any other low carb peeps on here? I guess it may not make as much sense for the roadies or track cyclists putting in the miles.

I lost 2.5 stone in the last 9 months just by watching what I was eating.
It sounds daft but I found the easiest way to do it was to use the Sainsbury's own brand 'Be Good to Yourself' ready meals. They taste ok, are properly balanced meals in themslves and you know exactly how many calories you are eating each time and portion control is taken care of for you. They have a good variety ( a dozen or so) and they work out at between £1.65 and £2.50 a meal.
I ate cereal, juice and coffee for breakfast, sensible homemade sandwich, can of diet pop (Coke Zero as it happens) and some fruit for lunch, one of the ready meals and some salad for dinner with a low fat yogurt for dessert. Usual daily total was around 1500 calories.
Never felt hungry, lost weight steadily. Still went out for the occasional meal/drink or cooked myself something I fancied now and again, just didnt kick the arse out of it.
Yes the meals get repettitive after while, but thats when you go out, or cook something yourself that you want. After that, back on the diet again.
Now I just eat less without thinking about it. I'm used to eaing smaller portions and I don't feel guilty about the occasional donut or packet of crisps. Weight has stabilised at around 14 stone ( I'm 6'3") and I'm fitter and healthier than I have been for a fair few years. I'm still not exactly skinny, but I am happy with my weight now and I know I can lose more if / when I want to.

@ nefarious yes I pretty much routinely low carb/sugar, I eat only small amounts of starch very occasionally, maybe once a week I'll eat oatmeal, buckwheat or sweet potato, I only eat sugar when I am in 'holiday' mode. I can train for ninety minutes on an empty stomach. Once you kill the sugar/starch you effectively become a 'fatburner.
I tried my first 24 hour fast today. From 5pm yesterday afternoon until about now. I ate nothing but did drink some tea & coffee with a dash of milk. It has been OK. Since about 2pm (three hours ago), I have felt a little light headed and have been very hungry. I am looking forward to eating in a minute.
Will I do it again, for sure I will. Although 24 hours is about as long as I want to go without food so I think I am heading little by little toward a daily fast as per http://www.leangains.com

Keep updating the chart people! My line looks so lonely by itself.
I've found that three weeks of working at a warehouse has helped immensely with weight loss, just constantly walking around and carrying things and being on my feet for 8 hours a day as well as only having two sandwiches and apple for lunch proved to be much more effective than the odd hour of cycling.
And yet. I've lost 3.6kg since January and yet the whole reason I started is because of this little pouch of podge on my belly which I thought some light dieting would eliminate eventually. Three sugar bags worth of weight later and it's still there! What can I do?

How do you calculate calories when you cook stuff from scratch? Or buy chips from the chippy?
